Summary

From the bestselling author of The Girl in the Corner comes a story that asks: what would you risk for a shot at happiness?

1984. Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl with the world at her feet, dreaming of what life will bring and what she’ll bring to this life. Then everything comes crashing down. Her bright and trusting smile is lost, banished by shame - and a secret she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.

2021. The last thirty-seven years have not been easy for Bess. At fifty-three she is visibly weary, and her marriage to Mario is in tatters. Watching her son in newlywed bliss - the hope, the trust, the joy - Bess knows it is time to face her own demons, and try to save her relationship. But she’ll have to throw off the burden of shame if she is to honour that sixteen-year-old girl whose dreams lie frozen in time.

Can Bess face her past, finally come clean to Mario, and claim the love she has longed to fully experience all these years?

Slow starter

I nearly didn’t continue listening to this audiobook as the beginning wasn’t really my kind of story but I’m so glad I persisted, as I soon became addicted to the storyline. At times i cried, which is very unusual for me, a thoroughly enjoyable story.

Really absorbing

Loved hearing it being read to me at night while I was trying to get to sleep. Wanted the heroine to get a grip and talk to her husband. She did eventually ( whoops) spoiler! Say no more....
Great narrator - author

Really enjoyed and thought provoking

I thoroughly enjoyed this. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it was very good. A good story and some great laugh out loud moments too. Initially I thought the story was very simple and the “shame” of the main character nothing particularly huge but then it became apparent so much more was part of it. Love the setting of the story part in the 80s as there were some great references to 80s times that brought back memories. Would definitely recommend. A solid 4 ⭐️!

Balled my eyes out!

Yes, the story line was predictable and a little boring at the beginning but so is life. I really hope for a sequel, because this was a brilliant book! I love romance story's but they can often be so fairytale ish, but this book was so real and down to earth. Will definitely be getting more book from this author!!
