Summary
1885 – ex-convict Emma Grady has returned to her hometown of Blackburn and been reunited with her lover Marlow. Now married, with a beautiful home, loving husband and wonderful son, she is still haunted by the past, unable to forget the cruelty of her uncle Caleb Crowther, who ignored her desperate pleas to save her and her tragic first-born.
A feared local justice, Crowther curses his niece’s return and sets out to destroy her anew, whilst also hounding Molly, her lost daughter. Born to a life of crime and poverty and deserted by her husband, Molly tries desperately to keep her three children fed and clothed. When Emma starts looking for her, Molly wrongly fears that it is Crowther searching her out and she and her children run away to become vagabonds.
Contending with hunger, exhaustion and the unwelcome attentions of the men who are drawn to Molly’s dark beauty, their life is at times almost unbearable. But Molly has inherited Emma’s indomitable spirit …

Repetitive and ultimately boring
This book could have been one third as long.
The writer’s obsession with and hatred of men is tedious in the extreme.
The trilogy was just plain shallow compared with Anna Jacobs et al and dire to struggle through.
I cannot recommend it.

Intense!
Even though I loved this story, I found it fairly stressful! I like to read to go to sleep but I found this book quite disquieting and I would end up really tense! It is a good story and I would recommend it and I suppose many people would argue that it’s brilliantly written if you can’t put it down but I was compelled to keep on reading because I was trying to get to a bit that wasn’t quite so despondent and stressful! Like the first book of this trilogy, I just wish it was a little more cheerful! I sound like I didn’t like the book or the trilogy at all which is far from the case as it is a good story and the narrator is very good however my personal choice is to read to relax and I couldn’t do that with this (in the same way I probably wouldn’t with psychological thrillers!!)

Struggled to finish
Having read the first two books in the series I was looking forward to this the last one. This book was very boring in places and have to agree with another review it kept repeating the story from the past two books over and over again. The story didn’t really start till the last 2 hrs and then it was rushed to the end. If this book wasn’t the last in a series of three and I wasn’t bothered about the conclusion I would of given up and returned it.

What is it about?
After several hours waiting for a cohesive plot to emerge, enduring appalling North country accents from characters who all sounded exactly the same … I gave up! I tried my best to get through it, hoping all the time that it would improve. To no avail. Unfortunately, this story is drivel. What a waste of a credit!
