世界的な観光地・日光の一角を成す戦場ヶ原。標高約1400mの高原に広がるこの湿原は、名前の通り古戦場であるが、その戦いは人と人との戦いではなく、神々の戦いである。伝説によれば、この近くの中禅寺湖を巡って、日光男体山の神が大蛇に、赤城山の神が大ムカデに化けて戦ったが、自らの子孫である弓の名手・小野猿丸の加勢により、男体山の神が勝ったという。男体山を神体山とするのは二荒山神社で、山頂に奥宮、中禅寺湖畔に中宮祠、東照宮に隣接して本社が建っている。一方、県境を越えた群馬県の赤城山には赤城神社があり、山頂のカルデラ湖・大沼湖畔と、南麓の三夜沢に鎮座する。また北麓の老神温泉は、戦場ヶ原で敗れた赤城山の神が、湯で傷を癒し、男体山の神を追い払ったため、「追神」と呼んだという地名由来がある。ただし、当地の伝説によれば、赤城山の神が大蛇に、男体山の神が大ムカデに化けたとされる。そもそも赤城山では大蛇信仰が強く、赤城神社の祭神は、古代、赤城山の龍神に助けられ、その後を継いだ豪族の娘・赤城姫ともされる。一方、三夜沢の赤城神社には、藤原秀郷が植えたという「俵杉」があるが、秀郷には琵琶湖・竹生島の龍神の依頼で、三上山の大ムカデを退治したという伝説がある。北関東の「ラグナロク（北欧神話における神々の最終戦争）」の謎に迫る。
