About this listen

Twelve years too late....

Xavier James is shocked when he runs into the first man who ever broke his heart. His ex-boyfriend has only gotten sexier over the past decade, but Xavier isn't about to go down that road again. When they cross paths at the hospital's urgent care clinic, where Xavier is doing a student nursing rotation, it's more difficult to dismiss the man. Thrown together by work and forced into close quarters, a visit to memory lane is incredibly tempting.

It's never too late to start over....

Dr. Trent Cavendish made a huge mistake when he walked away from the love of his life at age 18. When his best friend suddenly dies 12 years later, it rattles Trent into seeing just how empty his life has become. Determined to go back to the moment he put himself on the path to ambition over happiness, he walks away from the OR and takes a temporary position in his hometown. It's time to make amends to the man he left behind.

Oh, how things have changed....

Instead of the sweet but tame guy he left behind, Trent runs into a smoking-hot Xavier James dressed in bits of lace and silk at a gay nightclub. He never knew he had a fetish for a man in delicate clothing until now. His plan to earn Xavier's forgiveness immediately shifts to lust, and love's not far behind. But Xavier is wary of this new Trent Cavendish. The villain of his memories is considerate and kind, but Xavier wants to be more than a new goal to chase.

as good as the ebook

The story is always 4-5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, I’m over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Hot story, not bad audio performance.

I read Urgent Care 3 years ago when it released as an ebook and I enjoyed listening to the audiobook and getting reacquainted with the characters. Wyatt Baker did a decent job with the narration although he did tend to over-emphasize words more than a few times. Still, I really liked the story and I'm glad I listened to it.

Below is what I wrote when I reviewed the book back in May 2017:

Urgent Care is book three in the Hearts and Health series but it can be read as a standalone with no problem (you should read the first two books though, just because they are great stories).

I got hooked on DJ Jamison's books when I was offered an ARC of Catching Jaime last July and I've read every book she's put out since then.

Urgent Care is a second chance story; one of my favorite romance tropes. Xavier and Trent were together in high school but their relationship fell apart when Trent wanted to pursue his ambition to become a doctor and Trent needed to stay in their home town to help his family. Hurtful things were said they had no contact for twelve years. Trent has returned to Ashe to work and to try and get Xavier's forgiveness for how things ended when they were young. Xavier is afraid to trust Trent to not break his heart again.

I loved the heat between these two characters. Even though Xavier's heart and mind are reluctant to trust Trent again, other body parts are totally on board. Trent is finally making progress with getting Xavier to trust him again when life throws him a curve that jeopardizes all he's been working for.

This story grabbed me from the very beginning and once I started reading it, I didn't put it down until I was finished. I loved DJ's writing from the very first story I read but I think she keeps getting better and better. I also like that she usually writes an epilogue; the one for Urgent Care is great. I love getting another glimpse of the character's lives a few months or more down the road.

If you like M/M stories with a good amount of heat and great story lines, you should give her books a try; I don't think you'll be sorry.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

A second chance story to get your heart rate up!

Trent broke up with Xavier at their high school graduation when their plans to go to college together fell through, and 12 years later Xavier still bears the scars when Trent returns to town and wants to rekindle their relationship. Complication: Trent, now a doctor, and Xavier, a nursing student, have to work together. I really enjoyed this story about a second chance with characters that are more mature than when they were together the first time around, but perhaps even more attracted to each other and aware of what they want, but Xavier is also cautious and wary of risking his heart again. The characters are great, the story is engaging, and the heat level, with some mild kink, is turned up to high. Quality narration by Wyatt Baker. Recommended!

A great story by a great author

Story: I loved the second chance concept with a dash of forced proximity! Loved the development of the relationship and the personal development of both MCs. A very enjoyable story!

Narration: I’m sorry to say the overall feel of the narration was not the best for me. In many places, the narration was done with a very forceful inflection, bordering on aggressive for me, where the story did not call for that at all. The whole narration part was done like that and it was aggravating and exhausting in places. Not my favorite.
The voices differentiation was done well though, so there is that at least.

Hearts and Health series continues to entertain

The Hearts and Health series continues to develop into an engaging world that’s fun to visit. Urgent Care, the third entry, is a fun story, despite somewhat contrived tension between the couple.

This is a second-chance romance, quite a bit of time after their first go-around.

It’s also a story featuring a protagonist who is Black, and I’m so happy that main characters are more often successful People of Color these days. Xavier is developed immensely since we first met him in his roommate’s book, Bedside Manner (#2 in the series). We learn more about his motivations, drive and loyalty.

Trent allowed his aspirations take over and control his choices long ago. And while he managed to succeed and become the surgeon he dreamed of, life was missing something. When he experiences a devastating loss, he takes it as a chance to realign his priorities.

The couple are fun together and their bond seems true. However, an incident later in the book seems somewhat unnecessarily dramatized. Viewing this as the plot development point it is clearly meant to be means the reader can easily move along and take it for what it is; it does not dim the enjoyment of this novel.

Wyatt Baker’s narration continues to be strong. His commanding voice is perfectly suited to many of Jamison’s characters.
