Summary

When Nigel Walden is 14, the Unhappenings begin. His first girlfriend disappears the day after their first kiss with no indication she ever existed. This retroactive change is the first of many only he seems to notice. Several years later, when Nigel is visited by two people from his future, he hopes they can explain why the past keeps rewriting itself around him. But the enigmatic young guide shares very little, and the haggard, incoherent, elderly version of himself is even less reliable. His search for answers takes him 52 years forward in time, where he finds himself stranded and alone. And then he meets Helen. Brilliant, hilarious, and beautiful, she captivates him. But Nigel's relationships always unhappen, and if they get close it could be fatal for her. Worse, according to the young guide, just by entering Helen's life, Nigel has already set into motion events that will have catastrophic consequences. In his efforts to reverse this, and to find a way to remain with Helen, he discovers the disturbing truth about the unhappenings and the role he and his future self have played all along.

Equal parts time travel adventure and tragic love story, Unhappenings is a tale of gravely bad choices and Nigel's struggle not to become what he sees in the preview of his worst self.

Quirky time travel story

I love time travel books and I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit different from others in the genre. It was well narrated and I really enjoyed the story line.

Not sure how to describe this book

"Unhappenings" starts off with a basic premise that is intriguing and imaginative. And then slows down and loses its way.

By the time you get to the end it's leaning close to being tedious. There's just one element of sci-fi covered in the book and that''s time travel and there is a love affair (and its issues and problems) set against that theme. It's the love story that is really at the heart of the book but sadly, with the constant changes to that affair caused by the constant changes in time, if nothing else, it's confusing.

Oddly enough, the book was both enjoyable and frustrating. It is a good story - but it's too long in the telling.

Really good story line. unique and a unpredictable ending. I highly recommend I loved the uncertainty of the characters. and how well it all comes together.

Excellent. Well worth it.

Complex and clever story line but the author managed not to lose me anywhere along the way. Lots of twists and turns right until the end.

Great

OK this is a good listen with a great reader. It can get a little confusing and at some points did not make total sense. But give it a go if you like time travel fiction

Nice story

I thought it was a pretty cool story. It could be a decent tv series with some tweaks.

difficult

the story starts out great but just becomes a mess about 2/3 through. I won't leave any spoilers but this could be about 3 hours shorter and not lose anything.
