About this listen

In a world of magical power, merciless evil, and eternal darkness, the only light worth fighting for is the light you can never let die . . .

In Underland, hope has nearly been extinguished. There is no sky, only endless stone above. All things living and undead exist under the dominion of the Dark Lords, whose power is all but unlimited and whose evil is all but eternal.

Sorcerer Valdemar Verney is not one of them. The last of his line, Valdemar has devoted himself to locating his grandfather’s realm, a legendary place called Earth, where there is air and vibrant life, and where a sun shines in a blue sky. His latest attempt to uncover the way to Earth is thwarted, however, when the cunning Dark Lord Och captures him—not to imprison him, but to nurture Valdemar’s untrained yet formidable talents for his own ends.

As Valdemar learns more than he ever dreamed possible, Och’s loyal and lethal swordmistress, Lady Reynard, is on her own quest for knowledge about Valdemar’s true heritage and brutal past, which he has thus far kept hidden—even from himself. But the more the sorcerer and swordswoman discover, the closer they come to unearthing an awesome truth that will either usher the world into a new era of light or plunge it into the darkest terror . . .

The first volume of the hit dark-fantasy series—with more than 800,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

I stumbled across this thrilling and amazing novel purely by accident and what an absolutely wonderful error. This book was completely gripping, and beautifully narrated! I have already pre-ordered book 2 due for release December 6th!

Maxime can write more then comedic adventures!

Im a big fan of Maximes work, from Vainqueur to Perfect run I just adore his characters and the atmosphere he manages to put out. And Underland is no different, it has an compelling world with dark themes and mysteries but also great characters to compliment it!

This author is an gem hidden unfortunately from most people, his works are better then 90% of the fantasy Litrpg's or progression stories that are put out. His characters are grounded and have inner turmoil, they are flawed and fun at the same time. He manages to make some of the most fun scenes in these stories that you can imagine and he manages to make me take a couple of seconds to imagine the scene he describes to us cus how wild it is.

Underland is not as chaotic as his other works, it's more sinister and dark, but none the less have every great quality his work normally has regardless to these changes. Im exited to listen to the following book (also Vainqueurs last book)!

Also the narrator is amazing!

A let down after Perfect Run

I have enjoyed some of the authors other works (Vainqueur, PR) and respect his decision to try to write a novel in each genre but this cosmic horror (?) just wasn't for me.

There's no real goal or objective for the protagonists to work towards. They just bumble along through life in their semi-medieval distopia. Plenty of stuff happens but I was never invested in it. Even with the "mystery" somewhat solved by the end I'm still not sure who to care for. Then again, people love Warhammer 40k where every faction is bleak and horrific so maybe it's just not my cup of tea.

The characters were well written and had decent depth. The setting was somewhat well described. The plot made sense even if it was dull. The narration was good.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this and I won't read the sequel but I will come back when this author tries something else. His writing is very good even if I didn't love the story this time.
