Summary

"The year 1866 was signalised by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and puzzling phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten.... For some time past, vessels had been met by 'an enormous thing', a long object, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale."

When Professor Aronnax agrees to investigate a series of attacks by a mysterious sea monster, he begins an incredible underwater journey that leads him from Atlantis to the South Pole. Through unforeseen dangers, surprise encounters, and exotic settings, this epic adventure is a tour-de-force of imagination and narrative grandeur. Jules Verne was remarkably successful in foretelling the wonders science held for the future. This, his most famous novel, earned him the title of "Father of Science Fiction."

I could listen to this man read the phone book

The story was fantastic, I read this book several times as a kid, however the narration was outstanding, what a fantasy voice, passionate, strong and precise. Made this time around so much better.

Classic story given life by awesome narration

You probably already know the story, such is its impact on any submariner-related fiction in the last century and a half. Swashbuckling high (and under) sea adventure told at a near breakneck pace at times. What makes this version stand out is Harlan Ellison's masterful narration. A one-man play of voices and emotions, ranging from impassioned barrages to mournful whispers, and everything in between. It's like being six-years-old again, having a bedtime story read to you by your favourite uncle.
