Summary

Liz Truss's disastrous premiership was the shortest and most chaotic in British history. In the space of just 49 days, Truss witnessed the death of the longest-reigning monarch, attempted to remould the economy, triggered a collapse in the value of Sterling and was forced on a series of embarrassing U-turns that ultimately led to her resignation. The aftershocks of her time in office are still felt today. How did she blow her opportunity so spectacularly?

Based on exclusive interviews with key aides, allies and insiders, and focusing on the critical steps that led to her demise, this gripping behind-the-scenes work of contemporary history gives the definitive account of Truss's premiership.

Hilarious and Terrifying

Alan Partridge audio books are my favourite comedy books, this one however also made me laugh out loud whilst at the same time sending shivers down my spine. Partridge doesn’t exist. Truss does and I suspect she thinks she’ll make a return to public life. All British people should read this so we can experience things with our eyes open.

A wonderful account of truly momentous politics

Appreciating that this happened only two years ago it still can’t be underestimated how seismic some of these political events were. While there have been several accounts recently including a few which surprised me that completely absolved Truss of any blame (mr Peston being a good example), this is a fair assessment of all of the events that happened over this time and they really enjoyable listen that I could barely stop having on in the background.

The only thing I would knock this book down for isthe irritating effete voice used whenever quoting anything that Liz Truss said. In fairness this style carries over in a number of other books.

The intricacies of the chessboard

The intricacies of the chessboard as we listen to the game that is politics is laid out for the listener. In great relief we listen to the machinations of self interest of some politicians. Not exactly a surprise, but some very shameful behaviour by individuals who are meant to be serving the interests of the people. An excellent listen.

The Sources.

Excellent audiobook which categorised in grim detail just how awful Truss was as a PM.

probably the most mental time in British politics

brilliant documentation of an incredible time in British history. My son was born on Muni Budget day so my memories were blurry but this more than filled them in! a must read.

fabulous!!

I'll admit from the outset that I am no Tory and therefore maybe enjoyed this a little more than perhaps I should have, The overwhelming ego of a person who had not even led their party to believe they could have succeeded as PM is astonishing. But perhaps we should really lay the blame with the party members who actually thought she could, with very little regard to the rest of us! The 'behind the scenes' antics and conversations are very enjoyable. Considering the short length of time she was at No 10 there is an awful lot to say.
Loved it

Deep state or deep incompetence?

Spoiler alert: it’s the second one. Seldon assesses the short lived premiership of Truss using a framework of 10 tests that define successful PMs. She fails every one.

Frightening

As ever, authoritatively presented and engagingly written. a truly cautionary tale about what goes wrong when the superficial get their hands on the levers of power. Tory patty managers should be prompted to look long and hard at how they choose their leaders.

Excellent

A great insight into the car crash period of the Liz Truss government. Hard to believe what went in behind the scenes. Well narrated on audible version.
