Summary

Covering American transgender history from the mid-20th century to today, Transgender History takes a chronological approach to the subject of transgender history, with each chapter covering major movements, writings, and events. Chapters cover the transsexual and transvestite communities in the years following World War II; trans radicalism and social change, which spanned from 1966 with the publication of The Transsexual Phenomenon, and lasted through the early 1970s; the mid-'70s to 1990 - the era of identity politics and the changes witnessed in trans circles through these years; and the gender issues witnessed through the '90s and '00s.

Transgender History includes informative sidebars highlighting quotes from major texts and speeches in transgender history and brief biographies of key players, plus excerpts from transgender memoirs and discussion of treatments of transgenderism in popular culture.

informative and emotive

loved it very compelling, I learned about being respectful and open minded to all differences instead of questioning them all the time

Still not equal

Why do so many people feel the need to persecute minorities? If we could only appreciate everyones differences how much richer we would all be.

This book gives a difficult subject a very open and clear airing, trans seems to be the last taboo, despite the inspiring work of so many clear minded people, often referred to as activists but in my mind just people who want to explain more about trans issues and get equal treatment for trans people, it is extraordinary how that could be controversial,

I feel that I have a much better grasp if the milestones in the historical development of trans issues and trans rights. Infighting within LGBT+ groups is so counter productive, the book describes many of the lgbt infighting issues without judging too much, which is the theme throughout the book

Interesting, stimulating and a real good listen/read. A book describing a fight that makes you proud, unfortunately it makes you sad too. Unbiased in my opinion, there seems like there is so much more to say though.

An excellent updated review of US trans history

Loved this book because a lot of the recent struggle for trans rights in the US has not been reported here in tge UK. This updated edition in particular puts the recent backlash against trans people into perspectuve and shows how the radical feminist transphobia (TERF Wars) is nothing more than a resurgence of tired and bigotted rhetoric that has reared its ugly head at regular intervals since the sixties. i would have liked to hear more about the pre twentieth century history.

Terrific book giving a very good intro to trans history

I really enjoyed listening to this. The performance was great and there were so many amazing points and aha moments. I also adored the way the book ended the call for more collective action to help create a more equal and just society. Thank you for this. Loved it!
