About this listen
'Does anyone in this room think that I can do wonders? I’m a normal guy from the Black Forest . . . I am the "normal one"' Jurgen Klopp, 9 October 2015
Jürgen Klopp’s announcement in January 2024 that he was to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season would see an unprecedented outpouring of grief from his adopted city. The Anfield Wrap has followed Liverpool through nine remarkable years, ten cup finals, and eight trophies, and now the ‘normal one’ is finally set to return to a normal life.
But the story of Klopp and Liverpool is a special one. A city haunted by tragedy and economic hardship rapidly found itself reinvigorated and redrawn by one man's philosophy, and an approach to life and football that was driven by joy, passion and inclusivity. Klopp’s arrival led not only to spectacular footballing success, but also saw Liverpool itself becoming more culturally relevant than at any point since the height of Beatlemania.
Neil Atkinson, host of The Anfield Wrap, tells the story of this unique relationship with a passion, zeal and humour befitting of the man himself. Structured around nineteen notable games in Klopp’s Liverpool career, Atkinson expertly weaves the personal and the political into this retelling of one of football's most improbable journeys, one that would change both the landscape of the sport and the city of Liverpool forever.

Captures the emotion of an era
First up, I really enjoyed listening to this. If I'm being brutally honest, I'm not sure how well the production holds up to some of the big publishers, but that's understandable. Ultimately, this is a book for LFC fans, and more than that for Anfield Wrap fans. Fortunately, I am both, and so enjoyed the familiar tones of Neil as he talked me through what was easily the best period of being a Liverpool fan (in my memory).

Emotional journey
This took me back to so many key moments in both my personal life and life as a fan of Liverpool making me laugh and cry in equal measure. Took me back to things I forgot even happened and Neil’s way with words brings each memory to life in an unimaginably vivid way. Wish I hadn’t listened to could again for first time

Outstanding
Great insight into a transformative time. Neil’s story telling is - as ever - superb and the asides add to the feeling of a mate telling you the story. A brilliant listen.

Comforting like a hug or a warm soup on a cold day
My politics & views on life do not fully align with the wonderful people of Liverpool and has brought about many debates with friends from that unique of all cities. However as a Liverpool fan of 40+yrs it is my 1st love. This book is a wonderful love letter to our club the city and to Jurgen its brilliantly written and wonderfully narrated in only a way Neil can.
Warm, funny, but most importantly honest & heartfelt. a must for all football fans.

Boss times
Beautifully regaling some of the times of my life, but, crucially, not wallowing. Not a bit of it. Joyous and life affirming. Thanks, Jürgen. Thanks, Neil.
