About this listen
Transcendentalism embodies the concept that people have a deeper and more profound understanding of the world around them than simply by what they can glimpse with their senses. In this collection of essays and poems, the works of three transcendentalist authors are shared, each with their own impressions and opinions supporting the movement.
The first, Henry David Thoreau, reflects on the idea of simple living yet living deliberately in Walden. He expresses the importance of embarking on a journey of identifying what type of life to live. In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau declares his opinions on government and its inefficiency and uselessness, instead arguing that the people have a right and duty to rebel. Walking, Thoreau’s final publication before his death, is a collection of writings of his thoughts on nature. Written with a visionary tone, the author expresses to the listener the importance of remaining alert to nature.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, a 19th-century transcendentalist philosopher, explores self-sufficiency as a virtue in the essay entitled Self-Reliance. Emerson impresses the value of individual thought, instinct, and action. In Nature, a lengthy essay about the order of the universe, Emerson shares his thoughts about how nature holds the keys to unlocking its mysteries.
Lastly, Walt Whitman, considered one of the most influential poets in American history and heavily influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson, uses religious symbolism and allegory in Leaves of Grass to share his thoughts on the human body and the power of the human mind.
This collection of some of the greatest and most influential minds of the literary world will inspire you to learn more about the transcendentalism movement and listen to each of the essays and poems in their original version.

A miracle is a shift in perspective
This collection of essays and poems has shifted my perspective on life so much. Thoreau's take on simple living in "Walden" and his bold ideas in "Civil Disobedience" got me rethinking my own life choices and how I see the government. Emerson's "Self-Reliance" pushed me to trust my gut and embrace who I am in a world that has indoctrinated us to be mere copies of each other since we were little kids, and his thoughts in "Nature" made me appreciate the natural world even more. Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" showed me the power of the human spirit and the deep connections between body, mind, and soul. This book has really opened up my perspective and helped me grow and I think every human would benefit from listening to it.

Great Collection of Philosophy & Prose Remembered
This may have been the high point in philosophy and essay writing.
Before there was the over-praised musical Hamilton, there were the Transcendentalists: Thoreau, Emerson and Whitman.
They just don’t write or think like this anymore.
It is hard to believe that with so many words accessible to us through the internet, we don’t match the wisdom put down on paper by quill during the 19th century agrarian society.

A Path to Self-Discovery
This book of essays and poems has really sparked a lot of self-evaluation for me... this collection is kind of like coming home to yourself. It makes you think about what really matters and was something I desperately needed it but didn't know it. For all the people who hate small talk, cerebral deep thinkers, those looking to find their purpose and live a life that is meaningful, these essays are for you.

The path of self discovery
This collection of essays and poems opened my eyes to new ways of thinking and living. "Walden" inspired me to appreciate simple living, while "Civil Disobedience" made me reconsider my views on government and personal responsibility. "Self-Reliance" encouraged me to trust my instincts and be true to myself, and his essay "Nature" deepened my appreciation for the natural world. "Leaves of Grass" beautifully illustrated the connection between body, mind, and soul. This collection is fantastic for anyone seeking personal growth and a deeper understanding of life. Highly recommended!
