About this listen
Jack Ryan, Jr. is in a race for his life. Because in the jungle, the shadow state rules.
The vibrant economy of the new Vietnam is a shiny lure for Western capital. Companies are racing to uncover ideal opportunities. Not wanting to be left behind, Hendley Associates has sent their best analyst, Jack Ryan, Jr., to mine for investment gold. And he may have found some in a rare earth mining company, GeoTech.
But a trip with a Hendley colleague to observe the company's operations takes a treacherous turn when their helicopter is shot down. Some things haven't changed, and Vietnam is still the plaything of powerful neighbours. The Chinese are determined to keep Jack from finding the truth about what exactly is being processed at the isolated factory.
Now Jack is in a race for his life. He's got to stay one step ahead of a pack of killers while supporting his wounded friend. And he'll get no help from the government, because in the jungle, it's the shadow state that rules.

Ryan Jr a return to form
There is always the smack talk about it’s not TC writing but I am ok with a franchise.
That said the last 3-4 JR jr books had a little too much plot convenience - right place right time etc.
This has the onion skin of set up depth development (plus good plot basis).
Maybe a couple of eye of the ball moments but MP Woodward has beautifully set up the next installment and I am looking forwards to it.
Mr Brick as always delivers in his reading of course.

A bit TV series-like...
but I can't stop purchasing them! Great narration, familiar characters, OK tale, definitely a very easy listen when travelling.

Awful,
Attention to detail…. Jack Ryan is Kighted in the Uk, yet this writer thinks Red coated Beefeaters are on guard outside Buckingham palace……… wrong awfully wrong. Only place Beefeaters stand is at the towers of London. This is yet another basic mistake that clancy would not have made! i wish they could find a half decent writer or stop flogging this dead horse! should be ashamed. I guess the estate of Clancy are only interested in money and not his memory.

Narrated! One! Word! At! A! Time!
Narrator reads one word at a time with the same fake emphasis on each word. Someone must have told him that this adds some sort of dramatic effect. But it gets tiresome after a few minutes. And the plot is stupid.
