Critic reviews

"Hubbard was one of the great pulp writers, and this brief SF novel...is one of his finest works." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Scientology founder Hubbard first published Stars in two 1950 issues of Astounding Science Fiction. The story is still pertinent today. A-" ( Entertainment Weekly)
"A cast of talented pros, strong character development, and sterling production values make this a rich listen. Special kudos to Jim Meskimen as the terse, enigmatic Captain Jocelyn and to the sound effects team for a smashing, lush job....A standout audio offering." ( AudioFile)
"As in a number of groundbreaking - or time-breaking, I suppose we ought to say - works of science fiction, the science behind the story is more interesting than the fiction itself. Hubbard is a thinker who writes, rather than a writer who thinks, as most masters are." ( San Francisco Chronicle)
“One of the greatest science fiction novels ever written.” (Jerry Pournelle)

Superb

I really enjoyed reading this book when it was recently released in hardback edition. I was therefore very interested in an unabridged audio edition, which allows me to listen to it on the move. I was not disappointed, this is a really good adaptation of the book, which conveys the dark atmosphere of the story to perfection. It manages to combine time travel and space exploration in the same plot with a smooth simplicity and is never dull. You can tell it was written quite a long time ago by some of the language used, but this helps to convey the classic feel of the story. Recommended listening.

My most favourite storyline I've ever read

I found this deeply thought provoking and the character voices were just spot on and helped it even more. I've lost count of how many times I've relistened to this.

proper science fiction!

brilliantly written story about a possible future for mankind, without all the far fetched special effects, it deals with him man emotions of deep space travel and the consequences of fast as light travel and its effect on time. Good solid sci-fi from the best in the business. everyone should read this and draw the lessons it has within, and maybe we will actually have a future......

Dark!

This was a very interesting listen and well put together, although it is a dark story indeed and taken as a vision of man's future offers little hope.

In does ask some hard questions about survival and ethics and what is right and wrong and what happens when one goes out of communication with society and has no place within it.

In fact, whether this happens due to relativistic time distortion or by some other means the results are similar -- insular groups tend to go the same way, do the same things.

Not one to buy for a 'nice' read or to cheer you up, but a good book.
