Desmond McLaughlin was just getting through his life and trying to survive. A 9-5 job and a hobby that cost more than it earned left him just enough money to afford a crappy apartment and time to dream of something better. He was expecting to spend most of his life like this.
He hadn’t expected to be greeted by a CIA agent waiting inside his house one evening. He wasn’t expecting that CIA agent to tell him that he was being drafted for a special mission. And he really wasn’t expecting to basically get kidnapped.
But most of all, he wasn’t expecting to be told two important things. One, aliens were out there. And two, they wanted to take him as the first of the locals drafted from his planet to go to one of the few super-dreadnought class starships in the Hegemony and learn magic.
Join Desmond as he learns to manipulate mana—a source of power that exists beyond the reach of most people in the universe—meets vastly different alien species, risks life and limb, all while trying to pass classes. If he’s lucky, he will find someone he can trust out here amongst the weird. If he's very lucky, maybe someone he can love.

One of the best
Great storyline. Please we need book three on audible, just started book 2 and I know I’m gunna devastated when it ends.

excellent sci fi
a good sci fi tale with a VERY slow burn romance. a great bit of world building but no real peril or main threat as yet. also it teases a LOT! The narrators do an amazing job and bring everyone to life.
I look forward to the next one and hope to see more of the harem and also some challenges for the team.

Great new series.
loving the sci-fi fantasy aspects and the magic system is well fleshed out. The universe is a melting pot of cultures and governments that you can easily see tensions rising later on. With plenty of mystery surrounding the Rifts, its environs and thr creatures they spawn. Characters are the true strength of this book only let down by the often at times bland narration. Though it does get easier to listen as you go. In all a great start to a series with promise.

Very enjoyable, slow start but ramps up fast
I really enjoyed the book. The first few chapters were a slow start and I pushed through listening, but they set the beginning of the story & reasoning of the rest. The rest of the story is great, I was thoroughly invested
