About this listen
Mr George Smiley is small, podgy, and at best, middle-aged. He is disillusioned, wrestles with idleness, and has been deserted by his beautiful wife. He is also compassionate, ruthless, and a senior British intelligence officer in short-lived retirement from the Circus, the British Secret Service organisation situated in London. But Moscow centre has infiltrated a mole into the Circus, and it's more than likely the perpetrator is Karla, Smiley's old adversary and his opposite number in Moscow. And when, at the dead of night, a member of the Cabinet offers Smiley the job to 'clean the stable, do whatever is necessary', it becomes a long and bitter battle of wits between Smiley, the master of deceit, and the enigmatic Karla.

Don't Google the title.
For whatever reason I was just googling the name of the book, and Google "helps" me out with what most people ask about related to the book/movie. Giving away what is more or less the mystery that the book is about solving.
The book is not that engrossing for me so far, and I will probably stop right here since Google spoiled it. It would be unfair of me to give it a low grade before reading it all, but I wanted to warn people about googling the title.

Great story but slow start.
worth perseverance despite slow and confusing start as it gets really exciting as it goes on. Great reader he really brings it to life. Not sure it would make a good series on TV but as a radio play would be fantastic.

Excellent story told really well.
With echoes of the excellent to story, you can hear Alec Guiness as the story is told. Just a brilliant combination of excellent reader & story,

The essence of the spy's world
Magnificently written and narrated. A brilliantly crafted story. As close to the reality of the intelligence service as could be. A must listen.

A favourite of mine
I loved the movie, the tv series and the book. If I had to choose my favourite it would be the film, I loved Gary Oldman as Smiley, but that isn’t to say that Alec Guiness wasn’t excellent, he was. I thought Michael Jayston’s narration was perfection, and even though the locations were different between the film and the book, it was all good, strongly recommend.

Magnificent.
Probably my favourite book, read by a truly gifted reader.
Anyone who watched the original T.V. adaptation will recognise Smiley's voice and manner immediately.
Michael Jayston brings every bit of John le Carre's gripping story to life.
Even though you already know whodunit, the sheer brilliance of this story grips you from start to finish.
Wonderful.
