Summary

For readers who loved Wonder and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this extraordinary debut will make you laugh and cry.

A story that crosses time and generations, for adventure-loving readers young and old.

“My dad died twice. Once when he was thirty nine and again four years later when he was twelve.”

On Al Chaudhury’s twelfth birthday his beloved Grandpa Byron gives him a letter from Al’s late father. In it Al receives a mission: travel back to 1984 in a secret time machine and save his father’s life.

Al soon discovers that time travel requires daring and imagination. It also requires lies, theft, setting his school on fire and ignoring philosophical advice from Grandpa Byron. All without losing his pet hamster, Alan Shearer…

Time Travelling With a Hamster is a funny, heart-warming race-against-time – and across generations – adventure that you will won’t be able to put down.

What’s a hamster got to do with it?

I kept wondering, as I listened to this complicated plot unfold. The animal seemed a cuddly token. (Not so, it transpired.) Not that I cared about this seeming extra. The main character and his family, past, present and future, were completely engaging and the ticking clock plot kept it exciting . The concept of time travel is managed in a disarmingly ordinary way. I loved this listen and recommend it to adults too.Well done Ross Welford and Assam Zaman!

Sublime storytelling

Full disclosure: I am a 48 woman and not in the habit of reading children's books. I have no idea how this book came to be in my Audible library but I am so glad it was and that my curiosity got the better of me....

The main character's relationships are beautifully described and the author has captured the pain of losing a parent and conveys this sensitively and accurately. I have been on the edge of my seat as this story has kept me company on my car journeys over the last fortnight. I
have stayed in the car despite arriving at my destination to hear out the end of a chapter and lived the highs and lows of Al's adventures through the decades. I'd love to give Ross Welford a great big hug and thank him for such a joyous tale. So too Assad Zaman whose narration was sheer perfection. The whole package is sublime storytelling. If this was made into a film, I'd be first in the queue at the cinema!

A good, involving story, well told

Listened to Time Travelling with a Hamster while travelling in the car on holiday. 2 boys, aged 9 and 11, mum and dad all enjoyed the story equally- a rare thing! The plot was intelligent, a little bit different and had us all involved. The narration was also excellent.
