Summary

1986: Adrien, Etienne, and Nina are ten years old when they meet at school and quickly become inseparable. They promise each other they will one day leave their provincial backwater, move to Paris, and never part.

2017: A car is pulled up from the bottom of the lake, a body inside. Virginie, a local journalist with an enigmatic past, reports on the case while also reflecting on the relationship between the three friends, who were unusually close when younger but now no longer speak. As Virginie moves closer to the surprising truth, relationships fray, and others are formed.

Valérie Perrin has an unerring gift for delving into life. In Three, she brings listeners along with her through a sequence of heart-wrenching events and revelations that span three decades. Three tells a moving story of love and loss, hope and grief, friendship and adversity, and of time as an ineluctable agent of change.

Different to what I expected but enjoyed it

This was my first book by Valerie Perrin. Based on the blurb I was expecting the book to be more about the car recovered from the lake, thinking that somehow the story would be focussed around that. It is actually less than 0.5% of the book I’d say and it is more of a story of the three friends and their lives throughout the years (the car story is connected to them). The story runs parallel in the present (late 2017-early 2018) and then from their childhood to a few years before the present. Through the story we understand why everyone feels or acts the way they do in the present through the flashbacks from the past. It would be a good book for a book club as plenty to think about and discuss.

It’s a very long audio book and I listened on 1.2x speed. The narrator is great, really enjoyed listening to her.

The story is good, if sometimes it feels a bit slow but thinking back, I actually don’t feel the author could have left anything out because it wouldn’t have the same atmosphere without that detail or wouldn’t give us the same understanding overall. I wouldn’t say I loved the book but I certainly wanted to know how it would unfold and I enjoyed it. I think I will read Perrin’s other book in the near future too.

Wow wow wow wow wow

Everyone read this book, it’s fantastic. Yes it’s long but you get very invested in the story and as it unravels it just gets better better. Loved this

Beautiful

I love the story. Slow, but so full of meaningful reflection about lifes compexity. The author has the abilty to capture her audience using time/flashbacks to print her portraits.
The beautiful reading of the book adds valuable dimensions to the story.

Long, very slow and awful performance

Very disappointed with this book -probably would have been better to read rather than listen to as I found the voice intensely irritating

Loved everything about it

I loved the narrator's voice, perfectly matching the touching story. It's the first book ( out of dozens) that I would listen to again, to catch the subtle hints Valerie placed so masterfully

A fabulous storyteller

An amazing story very well written and put across brilliantly by the narrator. Sometimes it could be a bit difficult to distinguish between the voices of the different characters, but that might just be my impression.

Magnificent

A wonderfully woven story, full of intrigue and detail as it bounced seamlessly between decades, a writing style that works so well for this story. I found myself thinking of the book between listening sessions trying to imagine outcomes and often getting it wrong. I have previously listened to Fresh Water for Flowers so I had an idea of the powers of Valérie Perrin’s writing I was not disappointed with this her earlier title! I will no doubt listen again as I did for FWFF (another masterpiece in my mind). What makes Three a better listen to me was the narrator, who’s French pronunciation where needed was more authentic, I felt more immersed into France although the story would have held up in any language. I look forward to her next title.

Another superb Valerie Perrin

I love Valerie Perrin and this book was a fabulous story of the journey of 3 children’s friendship and fallouts growing up through life. A beautiful book.
