About this listen

The hunt for a serial killer leads a vampire agent to uncover a terrifying conspiracy in this dark urban fantasy by the author of the Hellequin Chronicles.

Vampires and humans live side by side thanks to an uneasy peace maintained by the Assembly. As an Arbiter for the powerful organization, Miles Watson is authorized to act as judge, jury, and executioner for anyone—living or undead—who breaks the law. But now Miles is up against a threat more sinister than anything he's seen in his centuries as a vampire.

A criminal network in London is offering wealthy humans the chance to become vampires without the Assembly's consent. When the process goes disastrously wrong, the Boss wants to eliminate any trace of the fiasco. But a rogue enforcer refuses to play along, and trouble quickly escalates out of anyone's control.

As Miles sets off searching for the illegal vampires, he finds himself on the trail of a monstrous serial killer. The twisty investigation takes him from London's deadly underworld to the rural backwaters of the Pacific Northwest—where an even more devious criminal enterprise threatens all of vampire-kind . . .

Known for his terrifying tales of urban fantasy, author Steve McHugh goes even deeper into the shadows with this noirish vampire thriller, which masterfully combines suspenseful plotting and intricate world-building.

Brilliant twist in the vampire legend

Steve has a knack for world building and his humour is amazing. Could have done with a talking fox man though !!!!

Story

The book started off a little slow for me but it became extremely enjoyable not too long in. The story was fantastic, interesting and the main protagonist really likeable. The performance of the narrator/reader was brilliant and made it an easy listen. Highly recommended, I continue to love what Steve Mchugh writes!

Another incredible book from an immensely talented author.

This book has created a very strong world with likeable and entertaining characters.
The pace runs smoothly and really becomes a page turner quickly.
The storyline is engaging and draws the reader into it and doesn't let go until the exciting conclusion.
I would highly recommend this book for any fan of a great story.

A Good Read

I'm a long-time fan of Steve McHugh's work and have read almost everything he's written. This is the second book I've listened to of Steve's through Audible, and while the stories in both have been great I struggled with the narration (which was a different narrator in both).

I don't know why but I'm hoping it's just a first-in-the-series problem, and once I get to know the characters (assuming this is the start of a series?) a bit more I'll enjoy listening as much as I do reading these books.

Great!

I’m not a big fan of vampire stuff. I have to admit, this was great in every way. Well written and performed. Look forward to a sequel.

Top title as always!

I never tire of Steve McHughs books. The constant shifts in pace, levels of detail are always incredible. The character building, mixing of mythology and real life along with the elements of humour from the characters makes everything almost….believable.
