Summary

Joshua Speed, the enterprising second son of a wealthy plantation owner, has struck off on his own. But before long he makes a surprising and crucial new acquaintance - a freshly minted lawyer by the name of Abraham Lincoln.

When an orphaned girl from a neighboring town is found murdered and suspicion falls on her aunt, Speed makes it his mission to clear her good name. Of course he'll need the legal expertise of his unusual new friend. Together Lincoln and Speed fight to bring justice to their small town. But as more bodies are discovered and the investigation starts to come apart at the seams, there's one question on everyone's lips: Does Lincoln have what it takes to crack his first murder case?

Inspired by actual events from the American frontier, Jonathan Putnam's thrilling debut, These Honored Dead, brings a verve and vigor to the historical mystery genre that listeners haven't seen since Caleb Carr's The Alienist.

Loved every second of this

I have listened to almost 100 books on here, some free with membership, many using credits. Mostly crime fiction, British and American. Some gritty. Some mild. Some brilliant and others not so good.
This book by far the most enjoyable out of them all, the writing is sublime - I just love the dialogue in this period. The narrator is outstanding. I haven’t read anything in this time period and to know it’s based on THE Abraham Lincoln and his real life early friends and acquaintances - based on real people yet a fiction piece just adds another dimension. (Listen to the historical note at the end of the book)
I loved every second of listening to this story and have downloaded all the rest. Don’t think about it just listen to it.

A gentle surprise

I was looking for an easy read and thoroughly enjoyed this more than I thought I would to be honest. The narration and especially Lincoln’s voice kept me interested along with a couple of twists I hadn’t seen coming. I shall look for more.

An American western who dunit

I was a bit dubious about the American theme to start with but the story has a couple of twists and I then got interested. An easy listen

Perfect

Wonderfully written without being too descriptive. I recently ready a Ruth Rendell with endless descriptions of flowers, plants, trees shrubs at every turn it seemed. Really frustrating especially given no one jumped out from behind one of these. So superfluous.

Back to These Honoured Dead- great storyline and plot and having previously read much about Lincoln, his mannerism, style and dialogue were true to what I’d read before.

Historically accurate without being too burdensome or superfluous to storyline.

Narration - absolutely the perfect voice, pitch, accent, pace. Added all four in the series to the library. Can’t wait to get started!

Enthralling

This whole series is excellent. Great characters and great plots - couldn't stop listening and downloaded each one as soon as the previous one was finished.

A superb historical novel - and mystery

This is the second of the Lincoln/Speed novels I've read but the first in the series. l approached them with trepidation, as a Lincoln admirer, lest he be a caricature of himself in them. l needn't have worried - there's a sense here of what Lincoln was really like in his late twenties. The society and attitudes of the time are brought credibly to lfe. The characters come across as people of their time, not 21st Century people in re-enactors' costumes, as is so often the case in historical fiction. The mystery is an excellent one . The Historical Noe at the end is first class. The reading - better say performance - is one of the best for any audio book I've heard. It's not unlike a one man theatrical performance of the highest quality and it brings a vanished world to life. A 5-Stare production in every way.

Entertaining imagining of a young Lincoln

historically faithful background ( I believe? ) gives this fictional whodunnit a realistic feel.. At times however Lincoln feels somewhat of a minor figure in the plot
