About this listen

Newly crowned Wizard King of the North, Alex Rogers, has a real mess on his hands. The surprise successor to the vanquished Vassal King Ailmer, he inherits a kingdom in shambles. Bankrupt from the looted treasury and past mismanagement of the northern kingdom, he must find a way to restore prosperity in a place where almost no one seeks his involvement.

Besides the financial woes, he is besieged by the Lords of Gundor, all seeking a return to the days when there was no central kingdom and the Lords themselves ruled unchallenged on their holdings in the Gundor Valley. Undermined from his first day on the throne, Alex must put them in check with no army, no money, and few allies to draw upon.

As if a bankrupt kingdom and unruly Lords seeking his overthrow were not enough, his newly born child has become the focal point of interest to parties unknown. This unseen threat snatches the newborn child out from under the watchful eye of parents desperate to reclaim their heir.

It's now up to Cassie and Alex to move heaven and earth to reclaim their child and put an end to any plans to alter their heir's destiny.

Why!!!

Can someone tell me why they change narrator's half way through a series. It's so frustrating. Spoiling a great beginning to a fantastic listen.

Great story line, character development and so much more. It felt like a true fantasy series come to life!

Flaming good story

The entire storyline is addictive. The first reader put more into the characters than the second reader. However I still enjoyed it.

I'm struggling to finish this

The first three books were great, Travis Baldree did a really good job of bringing the charachters to life and giving the story passion and excitement. BUT changing the narrator for this title?...BIG MISTAKE! This narrator may be appropriate for some titles like an airfix manual or even a car manual but for this?! he anhialated what promised to be a great 4th installment and rendered it a flat, monotonous and agonising listen. Sorry Mr Lamb, but I will be asking for my money back and won't be bothering with any further books in this series unless you bring back Travis for ALL the titles.

Dreadful change of narrator

Such a shame to change narrators so far into this series. The new narrator has seemingly changed the nature and personality of many characters simply by how he voiced them. Emma in particular has become a whiny weak woman instead of the woman finding her strength in her new magical powers that the story presents. Joey has also gained an indeterminate foreign accent that she lacked in the last book! I hope the next book returns to the original narrator. I’m not sure I’ll bother with the next book if it’s still the new replacement.

Change of Narration jarring

Great story continuing Rogers story but the change of narrator from the previous 3 is odd, anyone having listened before will take a good while to settle into the new voices given to the characters as very few match up to previous. He also doesn't seem to have as wide a range so many female characters especially sound both similar and whiny, which doesn't fit the characters.
Still worth listening to however for the story.

Great story, terrible narration!

I genuinely loved the 1st 3 books and the narrator had done a fantastic job at narrating them, but this one was lacking the same grip from the narrator. great overall story but this book dampened it for me.

Had to return due to change of narrator.

First 3 books are brill. Tried to listen to this book, but due to the change of narrator, I had to return and got my credit back.
Why the change?!?
I was so excited to see a 4th after loving the first 3, only to be disappointed by the lack of continuity.

Disappointing performance

This fourth part of the Alex Rogers series has a different narrator, replacing the excellent Travis Baldree.

Todd McLaren insists on pronouncing some central characters' names differently than in the previous three books and the inconsistency is jarring.
