About this listen

Tudor London: 1540.

Each night, after dark, men flock to Bankside seeking girls of easy virtue, prostitutes known as the Winchester Geese.

Joanie Toogood has worked the streets of Southwark since childhood, but her path is changed forever by an encounter with Francis Wareham, a spy for the King’s secretary, Thomas Cromwell. Meanwhile, across the river, at the glittering court of Henry VIII, Wareham also sets his cap at Evelyn and Isabella Bourne, members of the Queen’s household and the girls, along with Joanie, are drawn into intrigue and the shadow of the executioner’s blade.

Set against the turmoil of Henry VIII’s middle years, The Winchester Goose provides a brand new perspective of the happenings at the royal court, offering a frank and often uncomfortable observation of life at both ends of the social spectrum.

A fascinating book, beautifully performed.

A really enjoyable listen. Great to have a story that tells of life wider than the Tudor Court. This has enticed me to listen to more of Judith Arnopp's books. Highly recommended.

Fantastic listen!

A brilliant novel about my favourite period in history. Superbly narrated by the wonderful Alex Lee, who with her remarkable talent, draws the listener into the turbulent twists and turns of life at Tudor Court and beyond. The colourful characters are brought to life in your imagination and the storyline is gripping and emotive, giving you a great insight and understanding to the stark contrast in society during those times. A highly recommended listen!

Entertaining read for when travelling.

Entertaining read for when travelling. Nothing heavy. It gives an insight to life for the common folk in Tudor England and the stark difference to those with money.

Brilliant!!

A fantastic story which grips from beginning to end, with countless twists and turns on the way. The author skilfully recreates Tudor London so well you can almost be there. The narrator was absolutely brilliant too. A very pleasant voice, she slipped in and out if character easily. This was a total pleasure, I can’t recommend this highly enough.
