About this listen
The Sanatorium took you to the Alps and chilled you to the bone. Now, The Wilds will take you deep into the woods . . . and out there, it's easy to get lost.
After the dark events that scarred her childhood, Kier Templer escaped her hometown and twin to live her life on the road. They've never lost contact until, on a trip to a Portuguese national park, Kier vanishes without a trace.
Detective Elin Warner arrives in the same park ready to immerse herself in its vast wilderness - only to hear about Kier's disappearance, and discover a disturbing map she left behind. The few strangers at the isolated camp close ranks against her questions, and the park's wild beauty starts to turn sinister.
Elin must untangle the clues to find out what really happened to Kier. But when you follow a trail, you have to be careful to watch your back...

Sadly, not an enjoyable listen this time
I absolutely loved The Sanatorium. The Retreat was a little bit of a disappointment following in from that but I feel still had a similar ambiance. In my opinion, this book isn’t a natural follow on from the story at all.
I think this is really easy to guess where this one is going so half way through I felt checked out. The narrative wasn’t as gripping as the first book, nor was the setting. I also felt that the reason for this being based in Portugal made no sense (in the real world) and it was really difficult to suspend belief.
Sadly I think I’m out of this series.

Quite enjoyed it, but not as good as previous books.
Although I enjoyed it and listened to the end, this was not nearly as good as Pearse's previous books. They're always quite unbelievable, but this one was unbelievable, but also not as exciting. I do enjoy her writing style and the narration from Whelan was as beautiful as ever. I'll still look forward to Pearse's next book.

Another great one by Sarah Pearce
Really enjoyed this very much. I really loved the creepy first book in this detective series, The Sanatorium. This is quite different but is more touching, sad and emotionally charged. It covers the harrowing subject of domestic abuse very sensitively and I really felt close to the characters as a result of this exploration. Interesting setting as well. Gemma Whélan’s narration was spot on again. Look forward to the next one.

Another great book!
Loved this story. The whole thing, start to end, had me hooked. Love the very careful yet honest way difficult relationships and abuse is explored here, as well as the mystery being unravelled. Can't wait for the next instalment!

Really good build up
I really enjoyed Sarah Pearses other books especially the Sanitorium.
This one didn't disappoint either . Really like the way the story gradually built up and gained pace to the reveal . For once I couldn't predict the ending ! Good one 👍

Let down from previous work
Sarah Pearse’s previous work are some of my favourite books, so I pre ordered this one as soon as it was possible. Sadly I found it hard to engage with and didn’t feel compelled to finish it.

Confusing and Boring
Didn’t enjoy, couldn’t wait for book to finish! Completely lost with all the back and fore’s. No variation in voices to determine charactors.

Disappointed
I fell I love with Sarah Pearse as an author thanks to the amazing books Sanatorium and retreat so have been counting down the days to love stem to this and was extremely disappointed. Hardly any twists and the bland plot line has been a real let down. Doesn’t compare at all
