Summary
The White Company is a motley group of English mercenaries, fighting under the leadership of Sir Nigel Loring. Bound by an unquestioning respect for social order, patriotism and a lust for adventure, the company makes its way to France to fight in the local wars. With assiduous attention to historical detail, Conan Doyle paints a convincing picture of the chivalric life and manners of the 14th century. With a fresh, concise style, this is a robust and stirring tale of adventure with the spirit and humorous touch of a Chaucerian raconteur.

Terrific ripping yarn and more. . .
This is a great story heroic and engaging. I don't want to give away the plot but don't worry- Alleyne does not remain in the abbey! When he gets out a whole new world opens out before him, not all good! The characterisation is masterful and the reading par excellance. By the way, lisping (as one of the main characters does) was fashionable at the court of the time! Also, when listening to this story Victorian attitudes prevailed over some minor characters and the tale must be taken in that context. However, we never see the hero or his protector behave in a disreputable or dishonourable way- but always uphold the chivalric code. The White Company are marvellous in battle and the fighting scenes are exciting and entertaining. It is impossible to turn off during the battles which Conan Doyle wrote impeccably and the narrator delivers in a way that gets the blood going and almost makes you want to be an archer or a knight yourself!

A Ripping Good Yarn
Very well read by Nick Rawlinson, whose voice and interpretation is very easy on the ear. A grand tale of daring do in the days of yore. As a longbowman myself, I was most impressed by Arthur Conan Doyle's historical accuracy. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and commend it to you.

A Tour de Force
This was the book that Doyle was most proud of; and rightly so.
Rich in historical accuracy and with an epic and exciting storyline, the narrator breathes life into the characters.
Marvellous.

A classic tale of a bygone age
I have read the book on numerous occasions and have always been captivated by the story and the descriptive imagery, it is a sometimes over liked classic.
This is my first foray into audible and I was not disappointed, the story was relayed with such clarity and passion the characters burst forth and came alive, even more so than they did in my past readings of the book.
I must admit at the end I did shed a tear, high praise to the author and the story teller .
