About this listen

The Village Green Bookshop is a heartwarming story of good books and good friends, by the best-selling author of The Telephone Box Library, Rachael Lucas.

Frustrated that she spends all her time as either a mum to a football-obsessed teenager or a wife to a workaholic husband, Hannah wants something for herself. When the chance comes to take over the post office in Little Maudley, a charming Cotswold village, Hannah grabs it with both hands. She’ll have a career at last and also get her son, Ben, away from his trouble-making mates.

But village life is not so picture-perfect after all: Hannah finds herself an outsider in this tight-knit community where the height of your hedge is a gossip-worthy subject. Even her idea to introduce a small bookshop to the post office causes a stir. At least Ben seems to have found his place, as he joins the local football team, coached by ex-professional Jake Lovatt. But a shocking secret from their past threatens to uproot the new life they’ve made for themselves, and has drastic consequences....

Set in the same village as The Telephone Box Library and featuring some of the same much-loved characters, this is a charming, big-hearted novel from best-selling author Rachael Lucas.

Brilliant really lovely story, narrator not the best

I really loved the gentle, heartwarming story. Two lost souls find each other in a charming village. I really felt like I knew all the main characters. I got a little lost with some of the side characters though, probably as I hadn’t been able to read the book that comes before this one (as it had one topic too difficult for me to cope with).

The narrator wasn’t the best. I found her a bit stilted and emotionless. The accents just weren’t right either. However, not too objectionable and I listened to the whole story with gusto.

Turned off by the story telling

Really enjoyed the telephone box story but can't finish this
As a fully paid up Manc a) the Manc accent attempted by the narrator was god awful b) Salford is not a suburb of Manchester c) if there was a super star young footballer worthy of academy interest playing for any school team or youth team in they would have been snapped up by a scout Scouts from United City Liverpool Everton and surrounding teams attend youth matches regularly d) even as a city fan I have to take umbridge that the ex footballer hero played for Manchester United in the championship United play in the premiership e) I have lived in 5 houses in Manchester and knew my neighbours names and families
I Really couldn't relate to Hannah having never spoken to her neighbour for 5 years
Time Out has voted Manchester as the 3rd best city in the world in 2021 stating ''Manchester is the easiest place to express who you are, make new friends, get to know your neighbours and meet people who are different from you,' Time Out says. 'So, it's only right the city also came out as the friendliest and best for community spirit. The city's nightlife was voted top too.'

But it was the attempted Manc accent that grated most Even if they were really supposed to have been from Salford still narrator shouldn't have even tried it was annoying We are Manc not from some made up northern town

I dont know what Manchester has done to Rachel for her to slate it so much - And I really think she doesnt really have a clue about Football
