About this listen
Kathleen Hey spent the war years helping her sister and brother-in-law run a grocery shop in the Yorkshire town of Dewsbury. From July 1941 to July 1946, she kept a diary for the Mass Observation Project, recording the thoughts and concerns of the people who used the shop.
Among the chorus of voices she brings us, Kathleen herself shines through as a strong and engaging woman who refuses to give in to doubts or misery and who maintains her keen sense of humour, even under the most trying conditions.

Not Great
Narrator was ghastly. It was like listening to a very angry person aggressively shout out an extremely long shopping list. God help us.

Bad narration overall
Narrator seemed unaware of terminology for currency pre decimalisation. Spelt acronyms in full instead of reading it for instance NAAFI which detracted from fluidity of narration

Interesting topic
Not sure if the narrator never took a breath from one sentence to the next or if that’s occurred during editing. Tried reducing the speed on the app, but that doesn’t change the overall cadence . Rather distracting, unfortunately.

Shillings and Pence !!!!
I just bought this book and then thought, funny, I'm not at the beginning?!
I'd forgotten! I purchased it previously and returned it because of the AWFUL narration error of saying "6d" as "six dee" and 10/- as " ten ess" which drive me to distraction.
Please do your research and read it PROPERLY! Sixpence, Ten shillings, Ten-and-six!
I wonder if they will let me return it again?!

Hugely disappointed
I usually love these kind of diaries. Actually, I love this diary. The narration, however, is appalling. The narrator has a Lancashire accent. Maybe others would realise but I'm from Leeds so this is hugely irritating. The narrator also has no expression. She never pauses. She doesn't allow the true character of the diarist to shine through. Ghastly.
Then, the pronunciation. Oh dear. Does no one realise that pence may have be written as 6d, but no one EVER said 6 'd'. It was 'sixpence' - and the amount and the pence run together. As money is mentioned constantly I'm finding myself screeching at my Bluetooth speaker. So I've stopped listening a couple of chapters in. I'll buy the book and await a more authentic narration.
