Summary
Meet Monica Noble: the vicar’s wife with a taste for solving crimes.
Please note this book was first published as An Unholy Mess under Faith Martin’s pen name Joyce Cato.
In a quiet Cotswold village, all hell is about to break loose.
Monica Noble is throwing a party to welcome the village’s new residents. The guests include Margaret and her cheating husband Sean. Also on the list are a celebrity chef, an Oxford university professor, a 40-something divorcee, and the owner of a chain of gyms.
Then as the drinks are flowing, a shotgun blast rings out. One of the guests is found dead.
DCI Dury and Sergeant Jim Greer are soon on the scene and discover that the victim had many enemies. Almost all the guests harbor secrets and motives for murder. Even Monica’s daughter comes under suspicion.
When another villager is strangled to death nearly a week later, the stakes are raised.
Can Monica help the local detectives save her daughter and solve the murders before anyone else pays the ultimate price?
This is the first of a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with great characters and baffling crimes which will keep you gripped till the final minute.
Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

Rather too many characters and not enough storyline…. Just who did the murder
Need some more side interest about suspects. Only about who did the murder with no story about them.

Rushed and full of holes
I’ve listened to quite a few Faith Martin’s so far and this has got to be my least favourite by some margin. The story felt rushed, as if the author is churning out books , which she may well be if my audible recommendations are anything to go by. No characters stood out as remotely likeable at all, which is unlike her, the Arby and Val books are quite the opposite. The ending was rushed without any sort of voice for the culprit and was all based on the protagonist’s hunches as opposed to any real detective work. I won’t be buying any more of this series, not least because of the weird vibe between the protagonist and detective. The performance by the narrator was poor, all the voices were the same even though the author described one as ‘deep’ it was ignored and the narrator made him even more high pitched.

A convoluted plot
Certainly thorough in the work that must have been done in order for this story to have reached its conclusion.

Enjoyed the story, but...
I was going to give up on this audio book - lots of characters, who were introduced in the first chapter and I had difficulty differentiating between them. Nevertheless, I stuck with it and enjoyed the story - easy listening, gentle whodunit, and bit of a twist at the end.

Fab Faith Martin!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end! Fell in love with the little village and Monica and Graham the protagonists. Going to read the next one now. Loved it.

Engaging whodunnit
There were a lot of characters introduced in the first chapters. But they were extremely well written and came vividly to life. So not too hard to hold the thread of who was who. The setting was interesting, a converted vicarage containing many self contained flats and intriguing characters within. The narration was excellent.

Narration
I enjoyed this book a good plot however the narration was fine for the female characters but absolutely unsuitable for the male characters who came across as weedy little men and spoiled what is a fine story

Enthralling
Gripping storyline from start to end and vivid insight into the lives of a group of people no one would ever suspect as being able to commit a murder or be involved in blackmail which resulted in not one but two murders Brilliant

Loved it !
Undiscovered series by one of my favourite writers 🙂
Was drawn immediately into the scenario ……characters and their personalities.
The murder was a tricky one to figure out and the suspects entered and left the frame .
Thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and just stated No 2 in the series .
