About this listen
Their death. Our glory!
The Lottery is the chance of a lifetime. The one and only hope a girl has to escape certain death as a sacrificial soldier, fighting the bloodthirsty, flesh-tearing monsters that roam freely beyond The Wall. Put in your name, and if chosen, become wife to the powerful and gorgeous leader of the last of humanity, Lord Noah Sands. A supposed living god amongst the last of humankind.
For 17 years, Scarlett has lived as just such a soldier. Trained from birth to kill without question, and ready to die without complaint. Along with her group of misfit friends, she loves exploring the lost world beyond The Wall and fighting for humanity’s freedom.
For Scarlett, winning The Lottery is a fate worse than death. It means turning her back on her secret lover, and worse, giving up the freedom being a killer gives her. No chance. But Lord Noah Sands has only ever had eyes for Scarlett, and when he threatens the man she truly loves, Scarlett must make an impossible choice. Put her name into The Lottery and marry the monster. Or become something not even he can control. Something that will kill her quickly, if she’s not careful.
To save the man she loves, she'll risk everything. Her life. Her freedom. Even her humanity. "
The Walking Dead meets The Hunger Games in this gripping dystopian fantasy of love against all odds and life or death stakes.

Brilliantly Surprising!
This book lives in a world where Earth has fallen due to a massive catastrophe which changed the world forever. The lands are diseased with zombies who have varying levels of strength and want nothing more than to take out the living population. Everyone in The Verity have their roles, and are controlled by a draconian ruler who restricts everyone's movements & even worse dictates which children people can have. When rules are broken or you upset the wrong people, a special team of masked law enforcers are allowed to serve justice in whatever form they wish. Everyone lives in fear of upsetting them in case they are thrown out of their gated community, with little chance of surviving outside in the zombie riddled harsh lands.
Scarlet is a sometimes bratty, strong-willed individual who knows what she wants, is loyal to a fault, and caring towards the ones she loves. But her intentions and behaviour are often misunderstood by the very people who are closest to her. She lives to fight, and shuns domesticated life. But when her aspirations are challenged by a secret admirer, her whole being is threatened & her safety net quickly pulled from underneath her. When someone tries to blackmail her, she has no choice but to fight for her life, which leads her down a deeper, more dangerous rabbit hole.
TBH I found it difficult to get into this audiobook because it initially came across as a children's book. But once the author gets through the introduction of all the main characters and I allowed the story to soak in a bit more, it got interesting fast. That interest only escalated every time the author dropped another bomb which added to the mystery of Scarlet's situation.
This book has good world building, is well written, full of grit, lots of zombie action, mystery and danger. Apart from the introduction, the author doesn't allow you to ever get comfortable with the storyline, as more golden nuggets are dropped. The characters are complicated, well developed and there is a sense of never knowing who you can fully trust, especially when it's discovered that someone has murderous intent. In a way, this story reminds me of The Handmaid's Tale but with 'a little' less misogyny, with aspects of The Hunger Games and The Walking Dead.
Although it is quite a lengthy book, it didn't feel that way when reading, which just goes to show how much I enjoyed this book. I happily spent the weekend indulging in this story. The only thing I didn't like was the big cliff-hanger ending.
I wasn't sure about the narration at first however, the narrator quickly grew on me. Amy Putt is a talented narrator who easily differentiates between character's, accents, sex etc and does it in a believable way.
I definitely recommend reading this book for some interesting, action filled escapism.

I loved it all over again!
This book was incredible the first time around, listening to it brought the characters I loved to life, it gave them soul. The story is brilliant, original with twists and turns that I didn't see coming at all. MJ paints a world that you feel you can touch and I found myself wandering around my busy house, with my headphones in. I have no doubt that I will listen to this book again. 5 stars!

Amazing once again
Absolutely love The Verity! I loved it when I first read it, and love it all over again hearing it read!
Scarlett is such an amazing character, I thoroughly enjoyed going through her emotional rollercoaster of a journey again. All MJ’s characters are already incredible, and then they have been brought to life so well by Amy Putts narration! Absolutely recommend this book!

Another really good story from M. J. Lawrie.
I was initially expecting more romance from this book, given that it is mentioned as a driving force in the blurb, however, there is only a short snippet. Though I am hopeful there will be more in the second part.
Despite that, this book is still amazing. It’s filled with juicy intense moments, action packed and has a wonderfully badass MC to follow as we learn about this dystopian world.
I love the concept of the plot, three major conflicts occurring at one time and as usual, Lawrie's world building is spot on. It's refreshing to see an apocalypse approach with zombies years after the event took place. Most show you the event it's self not what happens after people have adjusted to this new way of life.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear the narrator use an array of accents for each character. She performed the scenes well and with enthusiasm, however, there were areas in which I assume she’d taken a break and came back forgetting which voice she used for the MC, it made me a little confused about who was speaking. It’s nit-picky, but she also doesn't use the same voice/accent for narration/internal dialogue as she does for MC’s dialogue, which didn’t make much sense to me as this is written in first person.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves zombies, emotional conflict and a unique spin of a dystopian world. And I am most definitely looking forward to part two.

Great narration of a book I fell in love with
I read this book some time ago but have now had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook. Beautifully narrated by Amy Putt who really brought the characters to life. I was devastated when part one came to an end and I didn’t have part two to dive straight into. Well written story with characters who are believable and you can’t help caring for in an original dystopian world. Aimed at a YA audience, but I’m a grandma and absolutely loved it! I would definitely recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A great post zombie apocalyptic story,
Part 1 of 2
Great story really enjoyed it, fast paced and fun, great action, and secrets are revealed..
Scarlett is a fantastic FMC that won’t let anyone let anyone boss her about, won’t let anybody manipulate her into doing what they want her to do, she’s someone who will defend her family anyway she can.. even if it means leaving everyone and safety behind to keep them safe….
Ends on a cliffhanger but luckily part 2 is already available….

A fast paced and engaging story
The Verity Part 1 was a fast paced and engaging story set in a thought-provoking dystopian world. Our main character Scarlett was aggressive and rude but absolutely trying her best and I loved seeing her grow and mature throughout the book.
My only issue was that the majority of the key relationships were formed off page, and whilst that makes sense in the context of the story (they grew up together), I didn’t feel as emotionally attached to some of the side characters like Scarlett did. I accepted they were her found family but I only really believed it with Tee. I’ve already started the second one because I need to see how it ends!
I received a free copy of the Audiobook from the author.
