Summary

Cletus and Warren Compton burn hundreds of acres of Ozark's forest to cover up their murder and kidnapping scheme. They soon discover not everyone on the mountain is dead. They head for "Mama's place" down south to escape.

Sheriff Tony Massey teams up with FBI profiler Dr. Boo Jordan, and two other agents, to catch the wicked Compton brothers. The strategy is risky but they decide to use one of their own as bait to lure the criminals back to Ash County.

At the last minute the team receives help from an unlikely source. Will this be the end of the Comptons, or the team?

Never let fear stop you from doing g anything.

The discovery of a child chained to a box by the side of a road on a foggy night leads to the even more dreadful findings of another 7 kidnapped kids including a dead girl, and the body of a youth in the ruins of a burned cabin. The hunt for the kidnapping killers begins.
Psychiatrist and ex F.B.I. agent, Doctor Boo Jordan had been the one to find the original child and becomes involved in the hunt, together with local sheriff, Tony Massey and the F.B.I. Finding the men responsible becomes ever more urgent as extra bodies are found and the identities of the wanted men was revealed as brothers, Cletus and Wallace Compton.

Although the man hunt, further crimes and personalities of the key law enforcers, in particular Doctor Boo and her husband, are covered, it is the character of the two brothers which becomes the most fascinating aspect of this novel. This is an intense, evocative, even surprising well written story and it is well narrated by Robert Cunningham, who further pushes the reader into the ongoing of the action to it's surprising conclusion. The straightforward, uncreative realism makes it hard to distinguish it from a true story.

My thanks to the rights holder of The Twisted Mind of Festus Compton, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. It was a surprise, totally involving, even emotional. Highly recommended to all enjoying crime thrillers. I personally look forward to future Boo Jordan stories..
