About this listen
With a new introduction exclusively in audio, read by Anna Pavord.
The Tulip is not a gardening book. It is the story of a flower that has made men mad. Greed, desire, anguish and devotion have all played their parts in the development of the tulip into the worldwide phenomenon it is today.
No other flower has ever carried so much cultural baggage; it charts political upheavals, illuminates social behaviour, mirrors economic booms and busts and plots the ebb and flow of religious persecution.
Pavord tells how the tulip arrived from Turkey and took the whole of Western Europe by storm. This beautifully produced and irresistible volume will become a Bible, a unique sourcebook, a universal gift book and a joy to all who possess it.

An incredible work of scholarship, the meticulous research and detail is really something to be applauded. It is a dense work and i appreciated being able to listen to it and absorb the wonderful history of these flowers. I would love to see an illustrated edition now please!

Beautiful flowers.
I'm sorry to say, but I felt let down by this book. For myself it would have been improved if the author had given commonly known names as well as the Latin and the quotes from letters written in French had been translated as well. This, I believe, has spoiled the book for me.
