About this listen

An unmissable new thriller from the master of the genre

An unsolved historical mystery. A brutal bomb attack.

Only one man can track down the killers that link them both.

It’s 2005: Ben Hope, recently retired from the military, is living in Ireland and using his SAS skills to find and rescue missing children.

But when asked to take on the case of two boys who disappeared centuries ago, he walks away, little realising he’s lit a fuse that will not only destroy the life of someone he cares about, but also lead him on a journey that proves old secrets come with a very modern price.

Ben must follow the trail across Europe, unravelling the mystery and dodging bullets as only he can. As the death toll ramps up, what is the connection between a murdered history professor, an English lord and a pretender to the Tudor throne – and can Ben find out the truth before the killers make him their next victim?

Critic reviews

‘Compelling from the first page until the last, Mariani and his fabulous protagonist Ben Hope entertain in a gripping tale that will have you turning the pages well into the night’ Mark Dawson

‘Thrilling. Scott Mariani is at the top of his game’ Andy McDermott

‘A high level of realism … the action scenes come thick and fast. Like the father of the modern thriller, Frederick Forsyth, Mariani has a knack for embedding his plots in the fears and preoccupations of their time’ Shots Magazine

‘James Bond meets Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code’ J. L. Carrell

‘History, action, devious scheming and eye-opening detail. Mariani delivers a twisting storyline’ David Leadbeater

Como siempre, una maravilla.

Mariani nunca falla en engancharte desde el principio y en darte datos que olvidarás hasta que se revelarán como claves. Estos libros nunca fallan en entretenerme de principio a fin.

Isn’t this his first book?

If you have listened to the Ben hope books then you will know that he has a place in France with friends and drives a Alpina BMW. This book doesn’t make sense. It’s almost like he has just left the MOD and is living in Ireland with his aunt. Weird. It’s supposed to be the 22nd book. This doesn’t flow with the rest of the series. Not impressed.

Could not stop reading!

This was such a different book for me - I love historical fiction and actually came across this by accident whilst waiting for my partner in a shop and reading the blurb! It was such a good story and obviously I loved the history parts! I liked the narrators voice and it suited the book but my only negative feedback was his punctuation - he would pause at strange bits in the story and make things sound like the end of a sentence but then went on. It’s such a tiny and I know a bit picky bit of feedback but the narration is so key for audiobooks! Despite that I loved this book and would definitely recommend.

Good but not the best

Not the best of the Ben Hope books but still enjoyed it. Maybe it was the missing characters like Jeff, Tuesday and Jayden that left it feeling lacking.

Prequel idea

What a intriguing concept to take us back to BH’s initial life & sets a good story line interwoven with historical fact’ making it conspiratorially enjoyable
