About this listen

When Nicholas Elyot and his friends set out to spend the Christmas season in the country, they are prepared for a hard journey in winter weather. They are also wary of violence on the road, for these are troubled times after the Great Pestilence, when bands of dispossessed and desperate men roam the countryside of England.

It is not surprising, therefore, when the troubadours hired to provide entertainment at Leighton Manor are attacked in Wychwood. Yet why should this insignificant group draw the attention of outlaws, who are searching for something? Is one of the troubadours not quite what he seems?

A good return to medieval Oxford

Having listened to all the books in this series, I found this story the weakest one of all. It seemed to padded out with the weather and a journey. I found that it was slow in getting to the "nuts and bolts" of the story. However, it was nice to listen to the continuation of life for Nicholas, his family and friends. As per usual Phillip Battley's narration was perfect.
I hope the next book in the series has a much stronger story line.

Another excellent story in the series

An enthralling journey into the challenges and joys of a medieval Christmas with Nicholas Elliot and his friends and family, beautifully read by Philip Battley. I look forward hopefully to another book in the series.

Book 5 as good as books 1 to 4

What a day, I have listened to this all day. It was fantastic. Ann Swinfen has brought to life the medieval period again especially listening to how Christmas was celebrated before the changes which were to come. The daily reverence to God, how slowly the seeds of the radical changes to come were sown. All tied up in a cracking tale, well told and well narrated.

Lovely story with great historical description

I love Anne Swinford books. they’re very gentle and full of description of the times and just the day-to-day lives are very ordinary people back in the middle ages you get to know the characters and really care about them I love listening to the descriptions of the countryside and the town and particularly the food that they eat and the clothes they wear

Danger amongst the Drifts

Once again excellent writing from Ann Swinfen, giving details of mediaeval life and the perilous times following the Black Death. A wonderful escape performed very well by Philip Battley.
