About this listen

Lila Dalton has no memory of how she got to this courtroom. The man in the docks is accused of mass murder, and she’s his barrister – but she can’t remember anything about the case. She can’t remember anything at all.

Lila is stranded on an island hundreds of miles from the UK, where the most serious crimes go to trial. The next plane out doesn’t leave for days.

And she’s being watched. Someone keeps breaking into her hotel room to leave cryptic notes, threatening her with deadly consequences if she doesn’t get her client off...

Can Lila Dalton win her case and solve the mystery of her own identity?

Confusing

This book kept me intrigued however, I struggled with the end and what it actually meant. I’m still not sure, there were so many things to remember

Not for me!

There are just too many questions that are not answered. I didn’t always know from the narrator which character said what. I’ve enjoyed so many books on Audible, this one just wasn’t for me! I found that I had to re listen to parts to work out what was going on and I still found it just difficult, it was as though it was for the sake of being difficult. Wouldn’t recommend!

Bizarre nonsense

Was really looking forward to this but my final thought on finishing was “What the he*l??!!”. A great premise that goes all over the shop with random nonsensical theories, mind control on a remote island, murders and something about 7s and 8s. I listened to the end to see if all would become clear, it didn’t do honestly do not waste your time. Life is too short.

I was persuaded by the reviews to try this book but Sorry it’s just not for me

The plot became hopelessly confusing, I really tried to persevere but the longer I listened the more it seemed pointless to me. I know other people have raved about this book so I guess it’s just me.

Interesting concept

The narration was very good. The novel begins well but descends into an incoherent torrent of ridiculous twists and turns. Not my cup of tea.

Good concept, but then the plot went in too many different directions

A riveting concept: a barrister wakes up in court with no memory of who she is or what case she is arguing, but there is a defendant to defend and a mysterious threat outside the courtroom. The book had a captivating start, where you follow the protagonist as she slowly pieces together information about herself. The author did a good job at capturing the confusion, fear and frustration one would feel in that situation. And the wins and losses of the legal proceedings were an absolute treat. I was fully engrossed in the story up until the last third where I feel the story looses clear direction, with too many different themes thrown in. I did not predict the two big plot twists at the end, but they didn’t feel fully satisfying because of all the ‘noise’ in the storyline.

it was a good concept, but the plot is confusing and a bit all over the place. I couldn't follow the story at all, had to stop midway

A confused narrative

Starts strong with a great premise but the story loses itself in confused subplots and the authors political messaging. Too much meandering and repetition to end on a huge monologue that provide a good twist executed poorly.

Ridiculous story

I went with this because of the rave reviews but omg it was ridiculous. It went around in circles & very unsatisfying end. Some clever ideas but maybe save them for 10 or more novels- felt like the author threw the kitchen sink at this one.
