Odd. Bizarre. Strange. Not a kids book.

This was a very bizarre book. I went into it expecting a children’s/middle grade read, along the lines of Redwall, but it definitely is not for children. There are some very graphic and gory descriptions in places - eyes getting pecked out and deaths of various creatures. I read a couple reviews that compared this story to the Watership Down, but this story isn’t nearly as good as Watership Down (Watership Down is one of my favourite books and I’ve read it multiple times). This book is short and fairly quick paced although in some places the descriptions are unnecessarily long (see above note on gory details). It honestly seems like the author was going for shock factor, and I suppose it was shocking, but it didn’t really fit with the rest of the story. There’s also a very bizarre twist in the middle of the story (you’ll know it when you get there). This book is a tale of revenge, as King Sparrow goes on a journey to find and kill his betrayer. Apparently sparrows are much more vicious that I would have thought. Also they must be bigger in this world than in real life, since animals were ready to eat him as a meal to share, when in real life a sparrow would be a single mouthful for them. Oh well, it is fiction so I’ll let it slide. The revenge plot is satisfied by the end, but there are a lot of questions left unanswered. Overall I will give this story 3 stars since it did hold my attention and kept me somewhat entertained on a long road trip. But I’m glad it wasn’t any longer.

I listened to the audiobook version. I liked the narrator a lot. He had a good voice for the story. 5 stars for the narration!
