About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In this bestselling audiobook read by the author, Gary Stevenson relives his time on the trading floor with raw honesty, gritty humour and true conviction.
An outrageous, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the trading game and then blew it all wide open
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken footballs on the streets of East London in the shadow of Canary Wharf's skyscrapers, Gary wanted something better. Something a whole lot bigger.
Then he won a competition run by a bank: 'The Trading Game'. The prize: a golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader in the whole city. A place where you could make more money than you'd ever imagined. Where your colleagues are dysfunctional maths geniuses, overfed public schoolboys and borderline psychopaths, yet they start to feel like family. Where soon you're the bank's most profitable trader, dealing in nearly a trillion dollars. A day. Where you dream of numbers in your sleep - and then stop sleeping at all.
But what happens when winning starts to feel like losing? When the easiest way to make money is to bet on millions becoming poorer and poorer - and, as the economy starts slipping off a precipice, your own sanity starts slipping with it? You want to stop, but you can't. Because nobody ever leaves.
Would you stick, or quit? Even if it meant risking everything?
This is an outrageous, unvarnished, white-knuckle journey to the dark heart of an intoxicating world - from someone who survived the game and then blew it all wide open.
'An unforgettable story of greed, financial madness and moral decay' Rory Stewart
'Hilarious, shocking and deeply sad — often in the same sentence' Sunday Times

Brutally honest and fascinating insight
Wow. I bought this thinking, hey this might broaden my horizons a bit, understand the big banking system a little more, that kind of thing.
But wow. I was gripped. A crazy story with some mad but perfectly believable characters. It doesn’t glorify them in any way, but is brutally critical of the selfishness and elitist nature of the trading world.
I think Gary does himself down by missing out his journey after he got out of that world though - I’d have loved to hear more about his activism and the world outside the game but I’ll just have to watch him YouTube channel to find out about that.
Enthralling and educational, I’d really recommend.

Superb.
I was genuinely sad when this ended. Brilliantly written, brilliantly performed. Laugh out loud funny in parts. Has a lovely arc to it. Probably the best audiobook I've listened to in the last few years. Highly, highly recommended.

Honest, eye opening and scary
This is a completely fascinating story. Gary doesn’t make himself sound like a saint in a pen of crazed hungry wolves out to make millions on the trading floor. It makes the story seem more believable despite sounding completely surreal. There’s a lot of swearing so be prepared!

absolutely loved it
wonderful insight into the world of trading and class division. came in with a lot of respect for the author, and left with the impression that, as well as being very good at maths and games, he's also a great storyteller and communicator. highly recommended

Great story about crazy times
Great story and a colourful picture of a crazy world we got to witness. Well done for reading the book as well. It had to be done in your own voice.

The End Game
Gary has a burning and urgent message, He has an interesting story to tell, in a way that is very uniquely Gary. We get the message, we know the solution, Do we have or are we ready to face the truth and change. Can we be like the Fictional Sci fi society of say Star Trek? Are we ready for this new enlightened way of thinking? Or are we destined to carry on destroying Humankind leaving only the very rich. In that world they will eventually hit a point were they run out of poor people. Inequality will destroy the Human race long before global warming. The greatest leap in human kind was as acknowledged in Sociology studies the act of farming as a collective and not as individuals. Socialism, could we do the same again, is universal income one solution marry the greedy of many to the needs of all by trying to balance and make a more equal society.

Relatable
Ruthlessly honest, fearlessly open and painfully eye-opening.
So many people who’re stimulated by new challenges go through the same cycle which Gary has gone through. The one where we realise entrepreneurship, creativity and individuality isn’t the grand recipe for success; rather…obedience is.
The main difference in Gary’s experience is that he has gone through this in the belly of the beast. The very thing which fuels the economic shackles to the working/middle class.
Thanks for sharing Gary.
