About this listen

A scientist and gentleman inventor in industrialized Victorian England claims to have irrefutable proof that time is not simply a concept - it's a whole other dimension. When he reveals the prototype of a time-traveling machine to his peers, he's met with skepticism at first...until he returns one week later, disheveled, bloody, and with a fantastic story to tell.

A cornerstone of speculative science fiction, The Time Machine launched the time-traveling genre, influenced generations of writers, and is recognized as a prescient vision of twenty-first-century fears - those of an impending environmental nightmare and the irreversible fate of a dying planet.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to listen to a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Time Machine, this edition of The Time Machine (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Just about worth your time (machine)

The Time Machine is an interesting read, as it is written from the POV of a couple of characters, one is the Time Traveller who recounts his adventures through time to his parlour guests and the other is one of these guests.

I have to give credit to the premise of this book first, because without it, I am convinced we'd have never gotten Doctor Who.

Unfortunately, that's where most praise ends. The book is short, unwilling to spend much time in its most interesting places and is relatively unfocused. It's guilty of being over-descriptive in part where more actual happenings would be greatly more beneficial. Just like the films that came later, the setup and the leading into the actual adventure is more interesting than the actual "future" part of the story. The playfulness of the Time Traveller, trying to explain his theory and show off his miniature device is very entertaining, as is his dishevelled state upon return from the future.

The narration however is flawless and will not add any hindrance to your enjoyment of this book. It's a precursor to almost every time travel book, television show and film to come.
