About this listen

The day Mike's dealer failed to show up was the catalyst that forced Mike and his girlfriend, Rosie, to take the first steps on a sometimes bizarre and tragic journey.

Their addiction compels them to steal from the type of people that would stop at nothing to retrieve their treasure. Slowly the couple become progressively more entangled in a web of their own making.

The story begins in London. Rosie receives a Valentines gift, which she may later regret accepting. As a naturally shy girl, Rosie hadn't wanted to be in a relationship with Mike. He had trapped her and now it was to late to extricate herself from the situation. However, fate intervenes and swings their fortunes back and forth like a pendulum, from love to hate and from treachery to tragedy.

May be listened to as a stand-alone.

Quite the Journey

I wasn't sure what to expect with this story and it was actually a very sobering look at substance abuse, addiction and an abusive relationship. Considering the topics involved, the author did a great job at keeping the story based within the realms of reality. There was no glamourising of it all, and she did a great job of showing how bleak these situations are.

The story was well paced, the characters were well written and I enjoyed listening!

The narration was well done, Leo was well spoken and easy to listen to. There were a few minor editing issues towards the end of the book (repeating sentences or retakes of some words left in) but nothing to distract much from the story. A simple mistake I'm sure.

A good listen and very well done!

Dark and entertaining

I enjoyed this murky tale that immersed me in Rosie and Mike's sinister world of crime and addiction played through their desperate relationship. The narration suits the world that Wixley expertly creates- bringing a harsh reality and honesty that kept me hooked-and pleasantly surprised with moments of light. Some mature themes handled carefully. A good listen. Thumbs up!

Emotional Story

My Review of

The Tethered Unicorn by E.M.G Wixley and Narrated by Leo De Haan.

The Tethered Unicorn is a gritty, emotional audio story. I found Mike to be such a well-written and complex character. He loves Rosy, but his drug habit, temper, and dealing turn him into such an aggressive character. Rosy to me seemed such a young and confused girl, easily controlled but able to see her life would end her up dead. I also found Rosy’s relationship with Spencer and his need to help her as he couldn’t help his son very touching.

The story itself follows Rosy and Mike as they deal drugs and try to hide from those who they have crossed. Will the people who are out to get them to discover their hiding place? Will Rosy see Mike for who he is and get free of the dangerous life she’s living? You’ll have to read and find out.

I thought the author did an amazing job of showing her readers not only what drugs and bad deals can make a person feel like and change emotionally, but also how the body itself can look so close to the end and yet the person can still be wanting something more for his/her life.

I would recommend this audiobook if you like gritty, emotional stories with great characters that you’ll love to hate and want more for at the same time.
