About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Terrible written and read by Yrsa Daley-Ward with Howard Daley-Ward as Roo.

'You may not run away from the thing that you are
because it comes and comes and comes as sure as you breathe.'

This is the story of Yrsa Daley-Ward, and all the things that happened - 'even the Terrible Things (and God, there were Terrible Things)'. It's about her childhood in the north-west of England with her beautiful, careworn mother Marcia, Linford (the man formerly known as Dad, 'half-fun, half-frightening') and her little brother Roo, who sees things written in the stars. It's about growing up and discovering the power and fear of her own sexuality, of pitch grey days of pills and powder and encounters. It's about damage and pain, but also joy. Told with raw intensity, shocking honesty and the poetry of the darkest of fairy tales, The Terrible is a memoir of going under, losing yourself, and finding your voice.

Beautiful. And raw. Beautifully raw.

I stumbled across Yrsa-Daley Ward on Instagram and found myself down a rabbit-hole of tiny personal earthquakes. So many truths. Very relatable truths. I love how she conveys such meaning so poetically. And each tiny revolution leaves you thinking....

I have never read a memoir before but found myself pulled in. I’m glad I did. Addictive. Honest. Pure. Dirty. Alive.

Genius

Yrsa's work is so real it cuts me too the core. Her performance brings her honest words to life in a way that is a work of art in itself. We are seeing the emergence of a literary genius, in my opinion. Eagerly anticipating her next work...

Erratic prose, intriguing content

I found myself in an ebb and flow with this book. Sometimes entertained and sometimes bored. Probably cause the style of writing felt a bit erratic and needed some time to insert myself in the story. I subscribe to Yrsa's newsletter and love her brutal inquiry/honesty and vulnerability to reinvent and redefine what identity and time and space adds to her as an experience. I wish I had started with her poems first and left this for later. She loves repetitions and lists. Sometimes they're intriguing. other times, annoying. Either way. The ending made it feel whole and I'm glad I stuck with it.
