About this listen

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be positive all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed by both academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited - "not everybody can be extraordinary; there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault". Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f*ck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

First half interesting, second half meh

The first part of the book, with its slight over use of vulgar language, gives a different perspective on how to approach life. I liked the description of where best to place your "f**ks to give".

Unfortunately the second half of the book descends into waffle about the authors life experiences, which are not particularly interesting.

A bit of profanity but written with purpose

This is the most valuable and wonderful book I have read in the past few years, it covers values, beliefs, theories and concepts to keep in mind and question. I think if everyone read this book then the world might finally get a bit less shit.

A refreshing view on self-help books

Very thought provoking and whilst I still retain some reservations this book echoed many issues I have with other stereotypical life advice.

No fucks given

I really wasn't sure what this was going to be like and for a few chapers, things still didn't clik for me. Then the "Ah ha" light came on and things started to actually make sense by the wzy of male type of explanation. Afyer finishing the book it became clear and I was glad to have been exposed to it, even if it was "manslaned" to me. I think I can now not give a fuck about a lot of things that I couldn't before.

Loved how it helps you put things into perspective

After living this far caring about too much I realised that I was behaving how I thought wanted me to behave. I had already started working on this before I came across this book. Somewhat of a catalyst it's spured me on to be more like me.

Brilliant

This book had anecdotes both funny and thought provoking. The creative use of swearing throughout this book was also humorous.

Had potential but presented badly

If you see a pile of stoole but you know that there is some gold under it, what would do? That is exactly how I felt while listening to this book. The main idea is good but the way it was pointed out made me not so happy about listening to it.

So many relatable experiences. The person reading it makes it even better. I'll definitely read it again when some time has passed.
