Summary

Fierce, determined, dangerous. No wonder her soul called to his.

As Chief of Security of Ixia, Valek has spent the last 15 years keeping Commander Ambrose and his citizens safe. With his complex network of spies, informers, and soldiers, it’s his job to hunt down and capture criminals, including the intriguing Yelena.

Sensing there is more to the story of why she killed a general’s son, Valek arranges for Yelena to become the Commander’s new food taster, training her in the delicate art of detecting poisons. As mysteries and a devious plot to harm the Commander unravel, Yelena’s presence becomes crucial. Will her intelligence, stubbornness, and survivor instincts be a help to Valek’s investigation, or a hinderance?

A companion novel to Poison Study, The Study of Poisons reveals Valek’s side of the story. Return to the world of Ixia and discover just how the lovely Yelena got Valek’s cold heart pumping!

Perfect companion to an already amazing series

This companion to poison study is an incredible addition, with the original story being viewed from Valek's point of view. The way Maria intertwined the two stories is inspiring and makes you fall even more in love with this series. The comedy, the action, the friendships are second to non for me within the fantasy genre. Suitable for older children and adults alike, this series remains a firm favourite of mine.

when a woman can confuse the assassin.

This is the book we have all been begging the author for, four years of begging and here it finally is. My god it was so worth the wait, this is the very first authors book I had picked up in about 10 years. It's a spin of of poison study but through Valeks eyes, filling in so many gaps of the story and answering many questions that had been driving me crackers. Yelana and Valek are the most memorable characters i have ever come across, I think because they are so well written and the very unique storyline is why they stick in my mind. This version from our favourite sneaky assassin is every bit as good as poison study, I would honestly recommend reading this entire series. Or listening to it, I prefer the ebook because I can read at my own pace, but I still enjoyed this very much. My favourite parts was learning more about Commander Ambrose, he's one of my favourite characters besides Valek who will always remain number one. I can't wait to see if more of the series will follow from Valeks point of view.

An amazing insight into Valek

Wow what a listen! I loved the original study series and this has made me want to reread Poison Study in tandem with this one! It’s such a fascinating insight into what Valek was up to and I really hope we get Magic and Fire Study from his POV as well!

Fabulous to hear Valek’s side of the story!

Many many years ago I read Poison Study for the first time and joyfully read over the years all of Yelena & Valek’s adventures, including various short stories. I have a big love for this writer.

A study of Poison’s is Poison Study written from Valek’s point of view.

It can be enjoyed as a standalone (though I’m sure you’ll want to delve into the rest after this) or for solid fans.

The narrator was well chosen and created the drama of Valek perfectly.

Love it!!

I have read, and re-read the chronicles of Ixia so many times, and no matter how many times I’ve read them I always want more. Finding this book from Valek’s point of view was amazing! Great story! I love how well it works, and I loved having an insight to how Valek felt throughout poison study. I hope that the author continues these stories! I always want more from this world!

Highly recommend

Loved this version of Poison Study, it was great to hear things from Valek’s perspective. The story, which we all know and love, gives us a deeper understanding of how Valek comes to love Yelena.
As usual, Maria takes us on a journey and makes it impossible to get on with our own lives until their journey has concluded so make sure you have hours to put by to avoid interruptions! Also, in typical Maria fashion, what you think you know happens isn’t what happens. If you listen closely you can hear her witchy cackle on the wind!
Highly recommend, a definite 5* read.
