Summary

The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

This is not just an analysis of demographic and political realities; it is also an eyewitness account of a continent in self-destruct mode. It includes accounts based on travels across the entire continent, from the places where migrants land to the places they end up, from the people who pretend they want them to the places which cannot accept them.

Murray takes a step back at each stage and looks at the bigger and deeper issues which lie behind a continent's possible demise, from an atmosphere of mass terror attacks to the steady erosion of our freedoms. The audiobook addresses the disappointing failure of multiculturalism, Angela Merkel's U-turn on migration, the lack of repatriation, and the Western fixation on guilt. Murray travels to Berlin, Paris, Scandinavia, Lampedusa, and Greece to uncover the malaise at the very heart of the European culture and to hear the stories of those who have arrived in Europe from far away.

This sharp and incisive audiobook ends up with two visions for a new Europe - one hopeful, one pessimistic - which paint a picture of Europe in crisis and offer a choice as to what, if anything, we can do next. But perhaps Spengler was right: 'civilizations, like humans, are born, briefly flourish, decay, and die'.

Critic reviews

"This is a vitally important book, the contents of which should be known to everyone who can influence the course of events, at this critical time in the history of Europe." (Sir Roger Scruton)

One of the most important books of this generation

This is the sort of book that everyone should read, even if you disagree with Mr. Murray. It is thought provoking and raises some very difficult questions about the capability of our politicians, the dishonesty of the media and the lack of any meaningful debate about the issues with migration into Europe.

He tackles some complex and controversial topics with intellectual honesty and a willingness to say things that some would consider politically toxic.

Reading the guardian review of this book is an exercise is missing the point, reading / listening to the book is a wonderful way to educate yourself on the challenges of the modern European world and the slow March towards its demise.

Good book but wish Douglas narrated it himself

This book is very thought provoking but as a fan of Douglas and his use of language this audiobook would have been improved with Douglas reading it himself.

Simply incredible.

If you have any love for western culture, and don't want to commit suicide alongside Leftist Establishment, you must ingest every word in this work and use it as ammunition against those intent on destroying our home.

Devastating critique of European leadership

By focusing on facts and insight over emotion and damnation, Douglas Murray shines a terrifying light on the veiled intents of modern European leaderships and the inevitable consequences of their untouchable ideologies. Compelling from start to finish and compellingly read by Robert Davies. You might not want to listen but these are truths you need to hear.

Astonishing evidence, everyone should read it

This book presents the arguments on a reasonable way and provides strong evidence for every argument. If you want to understand the current situation in Europe then reading the actual facts and statistics presented in this book will really help you. The racist and xenophobic claims against Europe just fade away when you realize how much Europe has given up based on that discourse and how much prejudice not progress this has brought.
The perception all over is that Europe is both a villain and a redeemer, world issues are somewhat caused by Europe so let them pay for it... Really? Have you seen how countries that have much more to do with war and injustice turn their backs on their people and deny them asylum and assistance? Yet you do not hear a judgmental comment anywhere from anyone. It is easier to blame whom everyone is blaming, and it takes effort to try and see the big picture and analyze the situation. This book will do all that work for you, just open up for its content.

Powerful and thought provoking

Having lived and worked outside of the West I returned to the realisation that this continent and the culture it produced is quite incredible. I had to leave to appreciate how open, tolerant and peaceful our society is.
In many ways this book has put into words, particularly it diagnosis of the self loathing of the west, things I have come to realise. I have grown up in an educational system that did the opposite of what every other culture does in celebrating the beauty and life of their culture. Yet western culture has given the world its highest aspirations and best hope for the future of humanity.
I now find myself having to learn for the 1st time the cultural heritage that I was born into and celebrate the richness and depths of the European masterpiece.
Uncomfortable reading. A challenge to my political foundations. A timely challenge to cherish what our forefathers bequeathed.

Uncomfortable truths

This is the discussion that needs to be had, but most are too afraid to confront the issues raised in this book. The very soul of Europe is at stake. As a civilization we're sleepwalking towards disaster. This book does not give a solution to the problems, but outlines them in a forthright way. Before we can search for cures we need to accept that we are sick. Brave writing.

Take the red pill Neo!

It is difficult to put this book down once you are past the first 30 mins. It was a real eye-opener for me on a lot of issues. No doubt it will be branded on a reflex as "extreme" and "phobic" but that just might show how deep our social conditioning goes, because the only thing extreme is the subject itself. The book is actually a powerful insight into our contemporary history: From Salman Rushdie to the formation of the British Defence League, via Charlie Hebdo to the 2016 German elections. All the facts and information is underpinning an uncompromising red thread. Who is actually the extremist here? Why are we doing this actually? If you have started to ask yourself some questions already, then I say "take the red pill"! Read this book! Just remember that all it offers is explanations, not comfort.
PS. If you have all the answers you need and no inconvenient questions at all are bugging you, then you have already taken the blue pill. You can go back to sleep if you want to.
