About this listen

Perfect for fans of Travis Baldree and TJ Klune, The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst is a New York Times bestselling cosy fantasy tale full of stolen spellbooks, unexpected friendships, sweet jams and even sweeter romance.

'Reading this book was like sitting in the sun . . . a warm, peaceful delight of a novel' – Katherine Arden, author of The Bear and the Nightingale

Every home needs a little magic . . .

Kiela has always had trouble dealing with people, and as librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, she hasn’t had to.

She and her assistant, Caz, a sentient spider plant, have spent most of the last eleven years sequestered among the empire’s precious spellbooks, protecting the magic for the city’s elite. But a revolution is brewing and when the library goes up in flames, Kiela and Caz steal whatever books they can and flee to the faraway island where she grew up. But to her dismay, in addition to a nosy – and very handsome – neighbour, she finds the town in disarray.

The empire has slowly been draining power from the island, and now Kiela is determined to make things right. But opening up her own spellshop comes with its own risks – the consequence of sharing magic with commoners is death. And as Kiela starts to make a place for herself among the townspeople, she realizes she must break down the walls she has kept so high . . .

From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, The Spellshop is a cottagecore cosy fantasy following a woman's unexpected journey through the low-stakes market of illegal spell-selling and the high-risk business of starting over.

Good cozy fantasy

Very enjoyable overall. I liked the writing. The narration was mostly good but it suffered somewhat from fluctuating volume levels.

This book gives you a happy, warm loving feeling

I love this book so much that after finishing it I directly started listening to it again from the beginning.
The writer is an artist with words and paints a beautiful image in your mind. Your minds eye sees the beauty of the Islands beautiful flora, fauna, magical creatures and inhabitants. Underneath is the beautiful message that when you mean well and trust in people you can create a caring and loving community.
If the writer ever reads this review, Thank you for this beautiful book, and please write a lot more cozy fantasy books like this one!

Cozy fantasy read

It was a beautiful cozy read. If you like fantasy novels but don’t want to make a flowchart to follow the characters, then this is something you might enjoy. Easy to listen to and good story progression. Would recommend it if you’re trying to get out of a reading slump.

Not worth a credit but it’s ok

This book is like a frilly bit of nonsense… it’s ok if you want something light

A Snuggle for a Stormy Day

This might just be one of the loveliest books I've had the delight of experiencing. It's a well thought through, gentle and beautifully contained world, easily loveable characters, and is very elegantly written. The plot is well paced, and never unnecessarily complicated, a trap some fantasy novels can fall into. I never underestimate the value or importance of a real comfort-read, and I could tell only a few chapters in that The Spellshop was going to become a go-to for me. Whether you want a sunshine happiness book for a warm, sunny day, or cozy read to hunker down with on a stormy winter night, I can't recommend this book enough, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Cozy attempt at Romantasy

The narrator does a great job and some of the story’s elements are really interesting
But over I wasn’t drawn in
I had a hard time connecting with the main character who is a very classic shy librarian trope, constantly self doubting and self deprecating herself.
I also could not picture the different characters and creatures very well from the descriptions.
As for the romance, I am not sure I got what these 2 saw in each other but I hope other readers will!

One of my favourite stories ever

This book is beautifully written, I was immersed in the world, loved the narrative voice of the main character, and the magic of the world ! One of my favourite books I’ve ever read! I want to buy the physical copy now just to have it for sentimentality in my house! 10000 out of 10!
