A compelling story wonderfully narrated
Having read the Iliad, I knew what the ultimate outcome of this story would be. And yet I did not know the journey would be so beautiful, so tragic, so utterly compelling. This is such a wonderful retelling of a story that many of us will know; using original material combined with creativity to imagine what life would have been like for Patroclus. He is such an interesting character, his actions change the outcome of the war and yet in many ways, he is overlooked. Getting to read this story from his point of view was wonderful and my words aren't doing it justice. I thought the narration of this title was good, the characters had distinct voices and the emotion of the story came across very well. I spent the last hour sobbing, but I know I will listen to this again.

Throughout most of the book, I didnt quite understand why knowing every detail about the protagonists life is so important but in the end it all makes sense. I cried at the train station. :/

I already knew the story from stephen fry's TROY but I loved this retelling from start to finish, thoroughly recommend whether your interest is in classics or love it is a great tale told well

Love story
I enjoyed this story greatly. It is a love story set in the times of Greek mythology. I found the insights, into how society may have been, interesting and also the thoughts about why men do what they do. At its heart it was a story of devotion between two people and yet fantastically refrains from being soppy.

Epic love story
Loved ‘The Song of Achilles’. Brilliantly written and narrated. The story focuses on the beautiful bond of two young people growing up loving each other as friends, then lovers and partners. The story entwines other profound themes such as family relationships, society norms and obligations, the value of honour, integrity and the price of fame.
I fell in love with the characters. Surely everyone must dream of experiencing a love such as this?
It’s a book that provokes discussion - especially about the constraints of a judgemental and restrictive society both in historic terms and now. If ‘’The Song of Archilles’ is a truer version of this classic story, what a shame that we have not been allowed to celebrate the ‘Best of the Greeks’ for his love and humanity - rather than the number of men killed in battle like countless other warriors? Would society have been different now?
