About this listen

The Snow Rose is the gripping story of a woman on the run from her past by Lulu Taylor, author of The Winter Folly.

I know they think I shouldn't keep her... That's why I've escaped them while I can, while I still have the opportunity...

Kate is on the run with her daughter Heather, her identity hidden and their destination unknown to the family they've left behind. She's found a place where they can live in solitude, a grand old house full of empty rooms and dark secrets. But they're not alone: in the cottage next door live two strange older ladies, sisters Matty and Sissy. They know what happened here long ago, and are curious about Kate. How long can she hide Heather's presence from them?

When an eccentric band of newcomers arrive, led by the charismatic Archer, Kate realizes that the past she's so desperate to escape is about to catch up with her. And inside the house, history is beginning to repeat itself...

Critic reviews

"It's psychologically intense, brilliantly written and perfect escapism." (Daily Mail)

The Snow Rose

If you could sum up The Snow Rose in three words, what would they be?

Sad, controlling, happy ending

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kate. The way Lulu Taylor wrote about how the grief affected Kate I found very moving

Have you listened to any of Imogen Church’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Imogen Churche's reading was good. I haven't heard her read before

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes - when I realised that Heather was dead. At the beginning I thought Kate and Heather were together!

Any additional comments?

Not sure I like reading about cults.

Dull and Predictable

Possibly the most boring book I've ever had the misery of listening to. Hardly anything happens and everything that does happen can be predicted within the first few chapters. The entire book is full of long drawn out passages of 'woe is me' from the main character and every other character is lacking life too, each one pandering to the unrealistic tedious tones of a depressed woman. The only redeemable feature was how well it was read aloud.

Too long winded

struggled to finish, my memorable moment was when Katy confessed that little Heather dies in the fire that Katy had caused by lighting a candle and forgetting to put it out.

Disappointing

I have enjoyed several of Lulu Taylor’s novels but this was a disappointment.
An odd novel and not very convincing or inspiring.

A bit dull

This is my second Lulu Taylor book having previously read 'The Winter Folly' which I really enjoyed. I thought this was an ok read but nothing near the previous one I read. The beginning was ok with Kate running away from her husband and taking on the house. Odd how she treated her daughter Heather but that will be revealed later.
The 'cult' side of the story was quite 'same old same old' of what cults are meant to be. Safe to say that if you are a mastermind at lying and a sex maniac then you will fit right in!
Kate's overall story was ok and the narrative was good. However it could have been told in half the time without the cult part which really added nothing to the tale. It is ok as an easy read Maybe pick it up from the charity shop or somewhere really cheap Certainly (in my opinion) not atall worth wasting your audible credit on. I will be returning it.

Not for me

This my first book from this author. I only chose it because it was 2 for 1 and I am so glad I didn’t pay for it. The narrator made it listenable. Just a regenerated Moonies story.

A depressing read

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't think of anybody who would like this book, even fans of Lulu Taylor's previous work.

What will your next listen be?

I don't know, but hopefully something more page-turning or uplifting.

What three words best describe Imogen Church’s voice?

Serious, mournful, calm

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

At the beginning there was some sense of tension and mystery, but in general the subject matter was heavy and dull, and just plain sad

Any additional comments?

I have really enjoyed all of Lulu Taylor's other books, so I do hope this one was just a blip
