Award-winning writer Abir Mukherjee is back with another brilliant mystery novel in the Raj-era Wyndham and Banerjee series.
A Sunday Times Books of 2021 pick.

When a Hindu theologian is found murdered in his home, the city is on the brink of all-out religious war. Can officers of the Imperial Police Force, Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant Surendranath Banerjee track down those responsible in time to stop a bloodbath?
Set at a time of heightened political tension, beginning in atmospheric Calcutta and taking the detectives all the way to bustling Bombay, the latest instalment in this 'unmissable' (The Times) series presents Wyndham and Banerjee with an unprecedented challenge. A gem of dual narrative
I've enjoyed all of these stories & this was as good as any. Well drawn characters, tight plot, interwoven with the historical background. Excellent narration really added to the project.

One of my favorite series ever!
Sam Wyndham is turning out to be one of my favorite detective philosophers. Solving crimes in a turbulent political climate where the moral hypocrisy of the British Raj is highlighted stronger than ever.

Decadence
This book based on a murder mystery has appealed to me in the decadence and the interwoven intricacies of an empire reaching its end and the uncertain complexity of what will replace it.

Maturing story line develops
The relationship between Sam Wyndum and his side kick Suren develops against a background of increasing anti British feeling in the Raj. Excellent storyline mirrors real life as ethnic groups are pitted against each other and Suren lands up on the wrong side of the Law . Can his friend save him ?

A series getting better and better
These books just improve time after time which is a bit of a bugger when they were 5* to start with! I’m happy to see the narration split. I had assumed for the first couple of books that Simon Bubb was British Asian so I was uncomfortable when I found out he wasn’t.
