About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Shadow Hour by Kate Riordan, read by Eve Webster, Rachel Bavidge, Andy Secombe, Roy Mcmillan, Helen Fraser, Daniel Weyman, and Steven France.

Nineteen twenty-two. Grace has been sent to the stately and crumbling Fenix House to follow in her grandmother's footsteps as a governess. But when she meets the house's inhabitants, people whom she had previously heard of only in stories, the cracks in her grandmother's tale begin to show.

Secrets appear to live in the house's very walls, and everybody is resolutely protecting their own. Why has she been sent here? Why did her grandmother leave after just one summer? And as the past collides with the present, can Grace unravel these secrets and discover who her grandmother, and who she, really is?

Hard to get into

I did enjoy this audible - eventually, but it took a while. It is an enjoyable story but it didn't grip me.

A 'Chick Flick' read

Not what I really like to read. But entertaining enough. The story was intriguing but somewhat predictable. A little twist at the end was unexpected though.

interesting twists

This book has a rape scene in it so is not suitable for all. Otherwise, it's a nice story with some interesting twists.

Intriguing

What started off as a great story about the past meeting the present turned out to be an intriguing page turner with twists you didn't expect. Very enjoyable!

Beautiful, characters you'll fall in love with

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was gutted when it ended! Great array of characters, a twisting plot reminiscent of Dickens at his best.

Excellent

An excellent story, beautifully written and read. I thought it might be a bit too chick-lit, but it's not. I highly recommend it.
