Summary

For the first time, The Secret Royals uncovers the remarkable relationship between the royal family and the intelligence community, from the reign of Queen Victoria to the death of Princess Diana.

In an enthralling narrative, Richard J. Aldrich and Rory Cormac show how the British secret services grew out of persistent attempts to assassinate Victoria and then operated on a private and informal basis, drawing on close personal relationships between senior spies, the aristocracy and the monarchy.

In 1936, the dramatic abdication of Edward VIII formed a turning point in this relationship. What originally started as family feuding, escalated into a national security crisis. Based on original research and new evidence, The Secret Royals presents the British monarchy in an entirely new light and reveals how far their majesties still call the shots in a hidden world.

Great book but mediocre recording quality

Very interesting and detailed stoey of the royals and intelligence services' interactions throughout history. even for someone more interested in the intelligence side than the royal family it was an entertaining and occasionally fascinating story

The audio quality let it down though, the recording was very sibillant which was constantly distracting and the narrator's voice a bit odd sounding almost machine-generated at times.

"Top Secret" irresistible even to Royals

Occasionally the historical context is a little light however it is a good story. It is read in the style of a romantic novel, which doesn't do justice to it. Clearly the reader is unfamiliar with the history and the names of some of the characters involved.

A good read.

The last half is better than the first – maybe because I've experienced a lot of it. The reading is very good. She keeps the reader engaged in what is a long listen. Focusing on spying, casts a new look on the Royals.
Recommend. And it's quite gentle.
