Summary

As the best friend of a psychic, Will Buchanan can’t help but believe in the dead. It’s the living that he finds to be problematic. However, after a spate of betrayals, he finally has the chance of a new life within his grasp, and he’s not going to risk it for anyone or anything. Staying safe is the name of Will’s game.

Jem Dawson defines the word temporary. A talented cameraman, he’s here today and will undoubtedly be gone tomorrow chasing adventure and danger. But, while he’s in York, he’s made it clear he wants Will, and Will can’t help liking the charming daredevil.

This inconvenient attraction results in Will accompanying Jem to the site of a notorious poltergeist outbreak. A malevolent spirit has targeted a family, and now the ghost hunting team for whom Jem does camerawork are going to be locked down in the house for three days.

The house is strange and filled with sinister and violent undercurrents. One by one, the group experiences threatening incidents, and as events escalate, Will has to ask himself if he's risking not just his heart but also his life with this impulsive gesture.

This is the first book in the Arcana Books series featuring characters from the best-selling Black and Blue series.

Mystery, snark and a great audio performance!

The Sceptic is the first book in a new series by Lily Morton. The Arcana Books series is a spin-off of her Black and Blue series. That is a great series but you can read The Sceptic without reading the Black and Blue books first.

I listened to both books in the Black and Blue series and loved them so I was excited when I got the opportunity to listen to and review The Sceptic. The story has all of the great humor, wit and snark that I expect from Lily Morton. Joel Leslie’s performance kept my headphones glued to my ears from the time I started listening until I finished.

I can’t do a better job of describing the book than the excellent blurb does. Be prepared for scary, creepy encounters and hot and sweet romance for Will and Jem. The epilogue is generously long and I loved finding out how Will and Jem are doing one year later.

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author or narrator.

Loved the paranormal aspect

3.5 Stars

Technically this can be read as a standalone but this is a spinoff of another series. There are chatacters from other books mentioned frequently. I hadn't read those books and kept feeling like I was missing important details but I still enjoyed the story. It is probably more enjoyable though if you read those books first.

The ghost story plot is well written, non stop entertainment and very creepy/scary at times. I usually don't read ghost stories because unlike the full experience you get with a movie, the fear doesn't usually come through in print but this book definitely made me stop reading a few times as it was just too creepy. Especially when reading in the dark which I don't recommend.

The only reason I didn't totally love this book is becauase even though I knew the plot was paranormal focused I still wanted the great romance that I expect from Lilys books. While the characters and their back stories were intriguing, the romance is very minimal and even though it's clear the main characters are interested in each other at least physically and will ultimately get their HEA like all of Lily's books, I felt zero steam from them. The "relationship" built at a snail pace. I like slow burns but those imply at least a build up of heat and connection to show chemistry and longing. With these 2 I felt nothing. The way delayed and breif interactions we did get felt forced which was really unfortunate. I finished the book as I was more interested in the ghost and I did enjoy the conclusion of that but in the end even the relationship HEA left me feeling meh.

I still marked it as would recommend, to anyone more interested in ghost stories.

Joel is a great narrator especially with British stories. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this narration. He was great at expressing all the emotions and brought the story to life. He gave the side characters their own distinct voices that suited. He can do female side exceptionally. I would have rated the performance 5 stars had the 2 main characters voices were more distinct. Regardless it was an enjoyable listen.

Ruddy Brilliant

Wow, where do I start? 2nd instalment into Blue Billings, and I loved every creepy word that Lily wrote.

Will and Jim are great characters who end up sleeping in a house inhabited by an angry ghost, or is it?

The characters have depth, and so does the story, which is all helped along by an outstanding narration by Joel Leslie, but I did speed up the narration to 1.25 on audible. Well worth a listen. I would highly recommend it.

Excellent and creepy

A new installment in the Blue Billings series, this one a side shoot with his best friend Will as the MC.

It's a creepy tale with a You Tube ghost hunting team investigating a family home. But at the heart of the story is Will, his heartbreaking history and conviction that everybody leaves once they have what they want from him. Will is a big softy. A gentle giant whose inate kindness even attracts tortured spirits. Add into that Jem, a wildlife photographer so determined not to end upstaid and 'boring' like the rest of his family that he's taken being a free spirit to such a level that he's now just running away.

A lovely romantic story of two men dancing around each other until a ghost house throws them together.

Add to the mix Blue and Levi, old Tom, the Viscount and some new characters in Ben and Liam and this is another enjoyable reas in the series.

And an excellent performance by Joel Leslie.

Good story

Able to visit Blue, Levi, Jem and Will once more. Good story though padded a bit with 'feeling' conversations!

Sceptics and Believers

paranormal mystery with romance and suspense. You don’t have to have read the Black and Blue series to understand this book, but I suggest it. First, that series is just great, and second, its fun to see some of the character backgrounds.

Will is a complex character – as the best friend of a powerful medium (Blue), the supernatural is not something new to him. What is new to him is the drama and fuss that goes into ghost hunting – especially ghost hunting that’s being filmed for YouTube. In a twist, Will, the man who’s exceedingly polite to Blue’s ghostly roommate (gotta love Rosalind), now has to play the role of a sceptic on the ghost hunting show his love interest Jem is filming. I love amusing, tongue-in-cheek twists like that and really enjoyed Will’s steady presence in a drama filled ghost hunt. The humor was top notch, but also there was some very suspenseful and creepy moments with intense action. The background for the ghost story was a little shaky, but that didn’t bother me since I’m more invested in the characters then I am in the ghost stories. I really want to see more Will and Jem in the future and of course, Blue and Levi.

Joel Leslie was absolutely wonderful narrating the audiobook. Joel is such a perfect choice of narrator because he really knows how to embody the characters and bring the storyline to life. His pacing and timing is on point which only makes all the humor better and better. The audiobook production itself was well done.
