About this listen

Convinced they are the victims of a sick, practical joke, Heidi and her three friends are resigned to spending the night at The Scarry Inn, even though the atmosphere is anything but welcoming. Surely the owners, Dick and Thelma Scarry, are simply trying to drum up business for their new motel by terrifying the guests.

But when Kara is found brutally murdered, they realize the danger is real, and they must find their way to safety before the secrets of the inn claim another victim. Making things even more difficult is the lack of cellphone service in the small town of Frighton, Arizona. With no clue who they can trust, the remaining threesome are now caught up in a fight for their lives.

I enjoyed this one. Good story and a nice build up. The narrator has an easy to listen to voice too

Scarry by name, Scarry by nature.

The Scarry Inn By Shirley McCann
Narrated by: Joey Eugene

I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Dick and Thelma Scarry own a motel in Frighton, Arizona ...with names like “ Scarry “ and “ Frighton “ a spooky themed Inn is bound to do well. But the owners seem to be taking things a step too far and what should be just spooky becomes downright terrifying.

Heidi and her three friends are travelling to stay with her father and her step-mother. Things have been strained to say the least between her and her dad for a while and as they now have a child she wants to try and bridge the gap between the two of them. Her friends accompany her for the emotional support but also to ease any uncomfortable moments should they arise.
As they approach the destination, the weather becomes increasingly worse and their car doesn't seem like it will make it either. Luckily for the group, they make it to the Scarry Inn. None of them are happy about the situation but when Dick and Thelma are less than welcoming, and bodies are discovered, things go from bad to worse.

Shirley McCann keeps the tension and suspense throughout the story as we try and solve the mystery as it evolves. The narrator, Joey Eugene, provides a smooth account appropriate to the spirit of the text maintaining the author’s intent which is consistent throughout.

Something was wrong...

It seemed a great idea for retirees Thelma and Dick Scarry: to open a small inn on the outskirts of Frighten, Arizona, and call it the Scarry Inn. It was nearly ready to open and Dick's brother, a major investor in the project, was arriving in a couple of weeks to help out.
It was the perfect Christmas Eve and the snow was falling, but for the four teenagers driving to spend Christmas with one of their member's father and his new wife and baby, it became a nightmare when the car developed engine trouble. No chance of a repair that evening and no cell phone reception, either. But fortunately the couple at Harold's Quick Stop gave them a lift to the Scarry Inn. The owners were family and, even though it wasn't open yet, Harold and his wife knew the Scarry's would be pleased to have them as paying guests for the night.
But something felt wrong. And none of the phones worked.

This is a great little teen road trip horror story, with a good atmospheric feel. And though characterisation is sketchy, it is sufficient to fulfill the needs of the p!it (although the frequent fainting of one of them did become irksome). The pace is not fast but the tension is good and, although there are a couple of real shock moments, it is not overly gory. With just a little adaptation, it could make a good semi-comedic horror film. Narrator Joey Eugene, provided good individual voicing for each of the characters and the text was read with understanding and good intonation although there were some slight hesitations in the flow of his speech. The performance, however, definitely added to the overall enjoyment of the book.

I was attracted by the title of the book and requested The Scary Inn from the rights holder, who generously and freely gifted me a complimentary copy. Thank you. I had not read the synopsis in advance and am glad I did not: the little twists in the tale are what make the story exciting and giving away plot development only detracts from the tension. This is a fun book to hear, tucked up warm against the cold, especially if snow is falling.
