About this listen

People called them different things when they first appeared. Walkers, Cryptids, Infected, the Ridden. The most popular was also the least apt, Zombies.

Chris stumbled out of his cheap motel room after the worst night of his life and straight into the apocalypse. It didn’t take him long to learn what happened, even if it was somewhat unbelievable. Doubts that are quickly dispelled with reality.

Heading to his parent’s farm, Chris is determined to make sure they are safe. Joining up with an old girlfriend, the two set forth to gather supplies and turn the farm into a sanctuary of their own. Unfortunately, they’re not the only ones with that idea.

This is not your normal zombie apocalypse story. As Chris is about to find out, it’s not just the monsters he needs to worry about.

It’s the humans he’ll have to fight to survive.

If you liked The Last of Us and World War Z, you will be sure to enjoy The Ridden.

Not litrpg but pretty good zombie post apocalypse

3 to 3.5 stars which I'm rounding up to 4 for a first book.

First off, this isn't litrpg nor gamelit. At least not this first book in the series. I have about an hour left of the book and at this point I think it's fair to call it progression scifi/fantasy, and pretty slow progression at that.

I think the author made a mistake in marketing this as gamelit as it much more clearly falls into post apoc zombie fic, even though they technically aren't zombies. Marketing this as gamelit meant I spent most of the book waiting for a game system to emerge rather than just enjoying the book.

As for the book itself, I think it would be fairly enjoyable if you go into it with the right expectations. It has a good twist on the z apoc genre with light progression elements thrown in. Some parts of the book are much more enjoyable than others as it can get lost in things I don't care about as a reader. There are two mc's, both of which aren't all that likeable at times but are alright at others, or the guy is at least. Not much is done to make the lady more relatable. But that can be a plus for some readers I guess.

The bad guy is pretty over the top but he manages to make things interesting and ramp up tension when the book had been pretty slow.

The main thing that makes this book enjoyable is the intrigue of the infection and its effects. More could have been done to make the characters interesting. Except for the doctor character, who I would have liked to see more of but guessing that'll be the case in the next book.

Despite many issues I'll probably get the next book, depending on the final hour I have left to listen to.

I got this book for free in a book giveaway by the author.

A good listen

The is a different twist on the zombie apocalypse. The characters are built well with a good storyline. Many ups and downs. The narrator does a great job bringing the story to life.
