About this listen
Herbert Molin, a retired police officer, lives alone in a remote cottage in northern Sweden. Two things seem to consume him; his passion for the tango, and an obsession with the "demons" he believes to be pursuing him. Early one morning shots shatter Molin's window- by the time his body is found it is almost unrecognisable.
Stefan Lindman is another off-the-job police officer. On extended sick leave due to having cancer of the tongue Lindman hears about the murder of his former colleague and, in a bid to take his mind off his own problems, decides to investigate.
As his investigation becomes increasingly complex it is with both horror and disbelief that Lindman uncovers links to a global web of neo-Nazi activity.
Written with all the usual flair so highly commended by Mankell fans this intricate crime novel, with its cast of new characters, heralds the end of the Kurt Wallander Mysteries and yet, ultimately, it leads the story back to Wallander's Ystad where a new outstanding series of thrillers can begin.

Just too complicated
Unusually, I was quite relieved when the book came to an end. Too many twists and turns, too many characters for me. I really enjoy Mankell but this one just seemed to weave in too much. Very interesting historically about the number of Swedes who supported Hitler in the last war.

My First Henning Mankell Novel
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Fully recommend this book- a good plot , some interesting 'fictional' insight into Scandinvian modern history, brought to life through great charachters
What other book might you compare The Return of the Dancing Master to, and why?
The Jussi Adler Olsen novels - good plot, believeable characters and a proper finale!
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Not one scene, but I liked the mix of pressure the dectective's personal issues caused versus the cracking of the case - added a realism to his character. The steady pace of the book also appealed and I always felt the story was going somewhere worthwile.......so many books are strong for the first 75% but then seem rushed or run out of steam at the end......this one stayed strong for the duration.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The very realistic internal highs and lows the detective had on his own health issues - won't say anymore as I might spoil things for others.....
Any additional comments?
If you want a good strong detective novel that's well written and moves at pace try this....

Wallander in all but name
The main character is pretty much a carbon copy of Wallander - a detective who spends a lot of time driving around alone thinking about his personal problems and dysfunctional relationships. The plot kept me interested and the subject matter is convincing, although there are far too many unbelievable coincidences. The performance is generally good, although every woman is given the same weary, pathetic voice for some reason. A bit too long.

Dark tale, welll told.
A good book to take on a road trip. While the protagonist is well drawn the lesser characters tend to seem a bit clichéd. There are a few holes in the plot but you can overlook as the mood is consistent. The narrator is great...a deep, serious, well modulated voice that draws you into the story even if some of the accents are a bit dodgy. I have purchased other books based on him as reader.

This Book Is Soooo Good!
What did you like most about The Return of the Dancing Master?
I most love the fact that each time I listen-I have gone back on three occasions and re-listened-I hear more of the story and more of the author's skill.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Return of the Dancing Master?
This book is bursting with memorable moments and memorable characters.
Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?
Sean Barrett is an excellent reader. I can and do, listen to his voice for hours. He is excellent when reading characters, but I love his narration best.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I found the whole of the murderer's story extremely moving. it is so well written.
Any additional comments?
I recommend this book. Thanks to both author and reader for getting me through hours of chores and whilst not enjoying them, I was very happy in the hours I spent listening. I will definitely read/listen to more of their work.

Absorbing
This was my first Mankell book and I deliberately chose one which wasnt a Wallender book. The story simply pulls you in, fascinatingly revealing modern life and that of the past, and the intersection points where the two collide. I simply had to finish the story, and I wasnt disappointed in the ending.
the narration is particularly important and in this case was well up to the job. Completely loved it.

Really Good
Any additional comments?
The narration is great Sean Barrett is always good, and the story keeps you riveted as it twists and turns. The characters are so well described so much so you can actually see them doing there parts.
